First Folding/Minig Rig HELP!?

Go to solution Solved by Tithonius,

I think im gonna end up going a different route anyway, but yeah, i definitly understand alot more about folding now, thanks a ton guys :D

The build so far: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/WZj399

Ok, so the rig that i plan to build will be used almost mainly for folding. I have no idea where i should really start and honestly, no idea what i really want to look for in a build like this. The reason that i used the HAF XB is for one im kinda going off of @Whaler_99 and his builds. and for two, because it can easily be used to have good airflow. Other then that, i have no idea really where to start. What do i look for to make my graphics cards work with that board? or should i get a different board?

Any and all help would be appreciated. Feel free to edit my part list and let me know what i should fix or do different. Like i said, i dont really have any experience with this, as ive been using my personal rig with just a single card until now. thanks guys!

the motherbosrd does not suport sli

I dont beleive it has to... I dont think that you have to be able to sli the cards if it just for folding. but i changed the board anyway, so that i am able to use the cases pci-e slots anyway, i want to make this look at least halfway decent anyway

I don't think you need SLI to mine or fold. I do believe that each card will be given their own projects to do/calculate.

I'm not really sure about this, but your CPU might be overkill for this. Otherwise, those triple 970s will fold so fast wow.

Yeah the CPU may be overkill, your right. I went back from the 4770k to the 4770 and saved almost 100 bucks. I dont think ill be doing too much overclocking for this system, so i think just the 4770 will be okay.

Are you sure you don't want to step down to an i5? 4670's aren't THAT bad you know. Unless... Are you planning on using your CPU to fold as well?

Also, i updated the case to a HAF 932 Advanced because, even tho i like the idea of being able to keep the system small and stackable, i will get so much better cooling with the 932 Advanced. I can add a ton more fans and it will just be alot easier to cool since this is my first build.

Yeah, your probobly right, i need to remember that this is just for folding, and not much else. I think ill end up going with somthing like a 4670k. How simple of a card do you think i could get? what would be the cheapest i could go and still be okay and not have to worry about it?

Oh I didn't know he was going to do it like that :P

And yeah, im not doin an open air one like in that video, i was going to use that motherboard then just use adapters and risers, but now i think im just going to put it in a different case entirely and not worry about airflow because of all the available fan mount locations in the 932 Advanced

If this is a folding/ming rig ONLY

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qNZksY

Case: Get an open air case like one linus has in the mining rig video

OS: use linux=free

CPU: does nothing for mining/folding compared to GPU's

GPU: consider getting 4x970's and a 1200watt PSU

Yeah, look at @Geldar's post. I completely forgot that CPU folding is crap compared to pure GPU folding. You can go with their CPU suggestion. And for GPUs, I would say your GTX 970 choice is good if you have to money to spend on it.

With that said, I have also heard good things about the GTX 960--if you're running this rig 24/7 to just purely fold, then a small PPD decrease is negligible. You're going for quantity not speed.

I dont want to go with an open air case unfortunately

I have NO IDEA how to use linux, and windows is super easy for me so ill just stick with that

I want at least a cpu that will do what i need it too outside of just mining and folding, so at LEAST an i5 will be what ill be going with

And i will experiment with expanding my GPUs throughout the build. as it is i will have to buy the GPUs over time anyway, my job doesent pay that well :/

That looks good,

One thing i notices, u mentioned you are thinking of adding more gpu's later but ur psu may be a little underpowered for 4x970's. might want to consider getting a 1000-1200watt soo u have some room to move

Yeah, still kinda tweaking it. Do you have any suggesstions for a PSU? I would like a 80+ platinum if possible, but gold is okay too if i have to, i dont wanna spend too much on it.

Nah its no problem man, i knew just as much as you do when i stated this build today :D as long as we keep learning and growing, we are doing good!

Do you think it would be worth it to save the money if i went with gtx 960s? or do you think i should stick with gtx 970s?

For mining i would recommend that you should get a Amd gpu 290x crossfire,or as far as mining goes, get a antminer it would be more profitable.

Its not mainly for mining, its mainly for folding. and the difference between AMD or Nvidia is negledgeable at best, and i know how to configure and troubleshoot nvidia cards. If you could reccommend some gpus tho, i am willing to learn a new configuration. ill look into the 290x

Thing is amd cards have way better hash rate's and these days troubleshooting amd cards isnt that different from nvidia.Instead of a 970 sli get the 8 gig version of the 290x and crossfire two of them

Its just about the same amount of money overall... and i would assume that having 3 seperate GPUs is better then just 2 cards. I like the 970 anyway, because ive been running it for a while now in my gaming rig, and i love it. what i need to know is wether or not it is worth it for me to get 960s instead of 970s
