MSI Z97 Gaming 7 - 3 GPU's

Hi All

Just wanted to float a quick question around.

I have an MSI Z97 Gaming 7 and am going to be running 2 way 980 sli.

I also have coming a gtx 970 that I will be using as a Physx card. (It was cheap so I'm using it regardless of the performance gain)

My question is will this work as I know the Motherboard has 3 PCI-E slots and 2 way sli support or am I going to have to invest in another MoBo?

Thanks

I'm not sure, but you typically shouldn't offload physx to another card, not sure.

But I do not believe you can use a nvidia GPU in a 4x s lot so no to that.

why the fuck did you do that? why do you need more than two gtx 980's? just rma the 970 and try to get your money back, your gtx 970 will probably bottleneck 980s, Physx barely needs any gpu power anyways

No you cannot do this.  The 970 will not SLI with 980's.

Figured I may as well

you can go 2 way sli but you cannot run 3 way sli.

so if you want to run a one 970 and two 980 in sli, then you need a motherboard that supporst 3 way sli.

I figured as much. Any suggestions with a Black/Red theme. I'm thinking Gigabyte?

He's not asking to be able to tri-sli. If I'm not mistaken a card doesn't need to be in sli to be used for physx.

@lpsgleaden

You are able to do this, as long as its not in sli. Two 980s in sli + the 970 in the third slot will work just fine.

Really? You are right in saying I'm not SLI'ing I'm not daft I understand that you can't SLI different cards/clock speeds.

It makes sense to me that it would work but I can't find anything online to confirm it as it appears very sparse people who do this kinda thing

And any idea how it will run.

I'd guess x8, x8, x16? I don't know?

It will work. The cards to be used for graphics (nvidia cards) must be 8x at the least, but physics cards can even be x1.

Go ahead and see for yourself. Its not like you're losing money on it.

Its run 8x/8x/4x.

Cool thank you!

I've ran SLI for years but never thought of doing this so never cemented the hardware. Just kinda took a chance on the cheap 970, engaged my wallet and then thought about it haha!

I assume if it's running X4 the performance is really not gonna be much at all

Nope

The physics translations are pretty miniscule. So it won't even max x1.

If I may ask, what are the models of your cards? (Just wondering what it'd look like)

I thought Physx was quite a chunk of a GPU especially when running Ultra settings on Borderlands for example.

Running Benchies it always seems to take up quite some GPU usage.

All 3 are Reference Models. Gonna mod the Green Glow to Red though as my system is red. (I had an MSI theme going on)

Its hard on the GPU, but the actual data is of a small bandwidth. Its hard to compute, but small to transfer. (Small data, big computations)

Fair enough. Makes sense.

I'm looking forward to getting it all together. Just kinda worried it wasn't gonna work. I don't expect massive performance boost beyond the 980's anyway but anything extra makes it worth it
