Lucky it wasn't a classic of some sort.  Minor repairs on something like that could easily run over $10k

Right now I'm thinking if I paid too much out of fear. Their Toyota SUV got dented and I assumed for it to be something expensive so I gave them $500.

Well that's not how that is supposed to go.  You swap insurance details, also calling the cops if necessary (sounds like this was well under what would require that, so no issues there), and then it gets worked out through the insurance.
