The R9 290 is obviously better.

If you want something with a price closer to the GTX 960, but whit more VRAM; look at the R9 280X.

A price difference of $70 doesn't seem close IMO. Perhaps you should be considering the R9 280X or the R9 280 instead [i am not familiar with the pricing though.].

However, if you're thinking about getting the R9 290 with the reference AMD cooler, don't. I've read that the cooler can be pretty bad, with issues such as loud noises generated from the blower style fan, and occurrences of thermal throttling due to the design of the cooler. Furthermore, R9 290 cards are known to consume a ton of power, which in turns translates to a requirement for a good cooler design to remove the heat generated.

If you really want to get a good AMD card, it would recommend the R9 280X with a non-reference cooler design. Else, save up and get the GTX 970 instead, which offers a much better price to performance ratio.

Hope it helps! Lemme know any mistakes k!

The 290 is 40% faster than the 960. Its almost twice as fast as the 960. Its in a completely different league. Get the 290 without a doubt.
