Hello everyone I am looking to upgrade from my current desktop which is running a late 2009 pentium processor with 6GB of RAM and a GTX 6800? (I don't know the exact name but it was back when GTX GPU's were in the thousands) . As you can probably tell its not ideal for editing but I have done it. It is editing 4K that is being problematic. I don't care if a 10 minute 1080p video takes 5 hours to render but a 10 minute 4K video taking about two days is where it becomes problematic. So I am looking to upgrade. My main question is AMD or Intel? I know AMD builds can be a hell of a lot cheaper and have more cores for editing but Intel has more compatibility when it comes to just about everything, as far as I know. I have also considered the Lenovo Y50 with 16gb of RAM and 4gb GTX 860m which is around 1100$ This is the price point I would like to stay at. PC Part picker links/general lists would be much appreciated. No peripherals please!

What's your max budget, are you gaming more or editing more?

If your gaming more just get the 5960x and call it a day, if your editing more like 75% more just get a xeon and get 2 of them for the same price as the 5960x and get 16 cores to boot!

Ok seems as if nobody has given any reason as to why Intel, The main reason people say Intel is due to the higher IPC (single core performance) of Intel vs AMD. For gaming this is key for getting a better experience with less fps dips (and higher FPS more often that not). Somthing AMD has yet to match.

Are you really asking him to compare a $200 and a $1200 cpu? really?

Both are for significantly different things... But nope, you keep comparing that camry to lambos and tell people the results.

Personally, I would get a fx 8350 for editing since it has 8 cores meaning it will be better than a intel at the same price point, that being said, for gaming I would definitely go with an i5 hands down as its better single core performance is much better and you really dont need more than 4 cores for gaming at the moment. So the choice is yours, what is more important, editing or gaming?

Thank you all for your suggestions. I know know my choice for CPU but I have kind of a low budget 1200$ or a little more so a xeon is probably not going to work.

There are xeons on the z97 platform which are cheaper than the x99 platform.

if you can afford intel then get intel. if you cant get amd 8320. I cant afford a i7 so for my next build im going with 8320.

PC is Intel Core i5 6400, GIgabyte H170 Gaming 3, Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x4GB 2400Mhz ,Sandisk Ultra Plus 128GB, WD Blue 1TB, NZXT S340, ASUS Geforce GTX 960. Fractal Design Tesla R2 650W. http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/793XNG. Graphics card choices don't always have to be dictated on performance. If you want the game stream and power consumption of the GTX 970 get that. If you want raw performance of the R9 390 get that. In the end we are all gamers, so what if your buddy gets an extra 5 fps?
