i have my i7 4790k cranked up to 4,8Ghz for gaming. When I run Simulation Craft I get a blue screen with a bunch of white words and I force a restart. this is the only program that this happens with... not even 20 hours of WoW or any other game give me a issue. Should I lower my CPU? I have ample cooling and the temp never goes above 42*

No. What is the voltage at.

You can't be serious.  Hyperthreading is a market joke?

Yes, it's too high if it's causing your system to crash. Either lower the multiplier or raise the voltage (just keep temps under 80c and voltage under 1.30v).

Yes. 84 + 145 x 2 = 374W. You could double the TDP (which you can't, since the CPU can only go so high and the 970s are locked down by Nvidia) and still be within 750. By 2. xD

But @anthonyc813 if Simulation is the only thing that causes BSOD (meaning not even artificial stress test), you may want to try reinstalling Simulation on your machine first. Then test it on stock settings.

There's no such thing as too much clock speed ;)

But if you're running into issues try going to stock and seeing if it happens again?

@NonaHexa AMD and Intel CPUs are different though, temps not comparable.

Not impossible but your FX CPU running at 52c on a Hyper 212 isn't a factor I'd consider in making it believable :P

I was just saying not all CPUs have to go to 70C under load, even when OC'd!

Of course, but 42c and under 70 aren't necessarily the same thing.

My i5 idles @35-40 on a better AIO :P

wow shit! thanks for all the comments so fast! I will try the best I can-

Yes, I live in the East and its fucking COLD up here on Long Island

I did the OC with that ASUS AISuite3 that came with my mother board and it did it all automatically. Ran prime for over 8 hours and no issues at all.

I leave up AISuite3 and check the CPU temp very often and when I see it hit 40-46 i hit the turbo fan button for a half hour or so

I have 7 fans in my Fractal R4. all are 140MM except the two high Static Pressure ones on the H100i mounted on top

full load to me is having a web page or two and gaming for hours on end. voice chat like vent, mumble, or TS3 as well

I left my 970s alone. Didn't OC them at all. eveyrthign is on ultra anyway and I;m very paranoid with messing with taht stuff. it took me 10 posts to OC my FX8320 without having a anxiety attack last year. the i7 kinda just did itself with the ASUS software

the 750w is plenty as per LTT community when I built my machine. I think i use like 668w total?

i did a fresh DL of SimC when I started playing wow again a month ago and never had a problem until I updated it to the latest version

What is your core voltage?

For reference my 4790K runs nice and well @ 4.8GHz with 1.31 V. Then on my H110 I get a max temp of ~76C

I will SS it today with the voltages and the temps after 4-5 hours of gaming since today is patch 6.1

Like I said I honestly don't know much of this or anything... if you read any of my other 400 posts its all the same panicy pete questions lol. Even when OC my 8320 I changed the multiplier and ran it at 4.2 with nothing else to adjust- so that was cake!

I did the software that came with the board and it was a one button fix kinda thing and has been awesome since December no matter what I do- except SimC!!! I will run it today and see if it BDOS's again as I learned what its called in another forum. A blue screen with a bunch of words all over and I force restart and pray it turns on!

But the temps thing I swear on my parents is not a lie. I am very anal with it going, in my head, "high" which is over 49*. Im kinda crazy like that...

Have you attempted to use Intel XTU to overclock instead of ASUS's suite? I've heard of a couple people experiencing crashes due to ASUS' suite sometimes.

Also, you haven't listed the voltage yet.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

You can never go to high!

No but dont use the automatic OC's they are never as good as a manual one ( apart from the time they take to do ). Watch linuses video on overclocking haswell. Dont go abouve 1.3v or 1.35 pushing it (which should give 4.8). How are you measuring temps and voltage? Try hardware monitor for everything in one.

Yea, but are they both connected to a rail with enough amps causing shutdowns when both draw max power?

Is this 4.8 GHz on all cores?  A single core OC sure could explain the mild temps.

And since you used AI Suite I'm going to guess your voltage is well into the 1.32 range or higher.  would not be surprised if it was 1.35 or above (not that your chip absolutely needs that much voltage, just that that is what AI Suite tends to do.)
