Depending on the motherboard and powersupply you will get different results.

I would suggest try an EVGA ACX cooler, or Gigabyte G1 gaming or ASUS DCU2, they seem to be pretty reliable.

I've been reading reviews on like every site and I always see a few of people saying their 970 has coil whine. The combination of your parts will defintely play a role but there is no one brand that is guaranteed to have no coil whine as far as I've seen.

do you think i should just for a 980 if i can afford it or is it a waste of money?

If you can afford it getting the more expensive card will obviously get you more performance in most cases but it depends what you're using it for. Both cards wreck games at 1080P and can do 1440P pretty competently, I don't know anything about your rig or setup so I can't say if one would be more worth it over the other/ At least in terms of the coil whine issues I've seen less with 980s but regardless of what card you get it still might crop up.

not a waste but, could be spent better a 970 will give you 90% of the fun for 70% cost.

MSI Gaming/Twin Frozr. I've heard some rumours say that their fans die, but any card can have dead fans, burn out or arrive DOA so... meh. The Twin Frozr is the quietest and MSI provides really good overclocking options. IDK if this is true in the 970 too, but in some other MSI Gaming/Twin Frozr cards you can push the power limit further than other manufacturers.

In terms of how audible cards are, Twin Frozr is the best, Strix is second best, and then Gigabyte and EVGA are kinda luck of the draw (some have coil whine, some don't). Zotac pretty much always has coil whine on high end cards.

In terms of performance, they're all pretty close but Gigabyte G1 and MSI Gaming are leading the pack.

EVGA has the best warranty though.

Pick your poison :)

Own a EVGA 970 ACX 1.0, no coil whine, but I doubt you'll find that cooler anymore.

Am I the only one around here who really doesn't like pcpartpicker?
I also like Ubisoft and Origin/EA
Guess I'm just odd that way.

My Gigabyte 970 ITX has no coil whine, and a lot of other reviews seem to suggest that most of them dont

I have the STRIX and have no coil whine to my knowledge. I tried listening for it, but couldn't pick up on anything.
