New form of malware attack on 18+ sites.

I was just flicking through my twitter feed and saw a tweet of a news article covered by Gizmodo. - Link to article HERE

 

The main point of this article is users who favor a specific site are being told not to go there as there is malware on the site. This is not un-common for sites like these, but what is unusual in this case, is that the ads are not the problem, but the source code itself is infected with Trojans. The trojan in this case has been linked to stealing personal data and installing browser plug-ins to help with this, along with more malicious pop-up adverts.

 

As mentioned, its not the ads causing this issue (although, themselves are probably malware) but its the source code of the website, so that means even if you just visit the homepage there is a good chance of your system being infected. (insert in-appropriate joke here)

 

Users can avoid this issue by using exploit protection such as Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit, but that is not the point. Users are being told to not visit this site until the problem has been rectified.

My thoughts?

I thought this was common knowledge that sites like these are full of malware, but after reading the story a bit more, I am surprised that hackers managed to edit the source code to do this. I would have thought it would have been more difficult to gain access to the code than it was.

Also, the amount of innuendos that could have been used.... I tried my best, it was so hard to avoid them.

UPDATE:

The site in question has responded and confirmed it was breached, it has fixed the issue at hand, but my advice, still be careful.

The continuing proliferation of malware attacks have made them a concern for any organization. This past Sunday, leading provider of adult content ******* was exposed to an attack for a brief period of time. Our security systems immediately detected the breach and we took direct action to rectify the situation in order to protect ******* users. The situation was fully resolved by Sunday evening and there is no longer any risk to visiting *******.

People are lilke that on the internet. Most don't care about any one except them selves. I was trying to stay out of the argument but live your life the way you want to and don't let anyone tell you how to live your life.

I got to say its not just the internet...its like that in the world people feel there way is the only way.

if you didnt want a reaction then you shouldnt of created something to react to, if you have seen actions like that in the past then why wouldnt you take actions to prevent creating an argument. The pornography industry is utilized by majority of the male populous and majority of this forum has males so adding a sweeping comment as you did may offend someone without knowing it.

It's pretty sad that many people seem to be focused on the adult nature of the affected website.  In case anyone has forgotten, malware can be written to exploit any number of flaws in Windows and applications.  This can happen to any website.  Porn has little to do with it.
