Windows 7 device Icons

I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I'll just try :P

I have played a bit with the Windows Metadata Editor and wanted to change the (ugly) default icons to something that resembles the real device.

Now tell me what you think about my accomplishments :D

I won't change the Monitor icon because I'm changing it soon and I was too lazy to change the xbox 360 icons form that grey to black.

let's make windows a bit more beautiful :P

ps: yes I know that the picture I used for my Kraken X60 is a X61 :P

How? I'd like to do this :)

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/206723-icon-make-image.html where the tutorials I used. a few steps are written a bit weird so if you have question I'll help :)

the short version would be that you need an icon that has 13 layers and then you use this https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/dn629490(v=vs.85).aspxto bind it to the device. Be careful with the association! on my first try every usb device turned to a M65 mouse and I had to unplug everything to see what is what

Pretty sure you just right click and go to properties or something :D

It seems impossible until it's done.

that's the way it works with folders and shortcuts but for devices and printers you have to use a microsoft tool to bind the icon to a device

I can make Icons for you. you only need to add them to your device. I don't need long for an icon

never really cared much for the device stage in win7 lol. i remember trying this way back during Win7 beta and we had to screw around in random folders to get this stuff.

even after all these years the only real icon that managed to get in there is is my printer.

also where is everything on yours? theres a whole bunch of random shit here in mine but yours has almost nothing!

I keep my stuff clean :D I only use about 3 more devices (card reader, graphic tablet and the 360 controller that goes with the wireless dongle) and my drives are not shown there.

I did not include the printers because I did not change anything there.

I nearly never use this screen but I had to  check something with my printer and got shocked by the ugliness

Do you have any suggestions? I used IcoFX and GIMP (2.8)

you need one set in 32 bpp 8bit alpha (here with the 256x256 layer) and then one set of 8bpp with a 256 palette and another set of 4bpp with a 16 palette. so 5 layers in 32 bpp, 4 in 8bpp and 4 in 4bpp

Thanks man! You're amazing, it worked!

Now I can finally personalize my icons :D
