What GPU is right for me?

Go to solution Solved by Will Barnard,

Probably going with the 970

Hey guys,

First off, here's my setup:

               CPU Intel Core i7 4790k @ 4.00GHz

Motherboard MSI Z97 GAMING 7

              RAM 12GB (1x4GB+1x8GB) Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz

GPU EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 2GB FTW SC

         Storage Seagate Barracuda 1TB

               PSU Corsair AX760

So I've recently upgraded my CPU, now I need a GPU that can keep up with it  ^_^

I don't really want to spend more than £300 (which is roughly $450), so I'm looking for a card that can run the latest AAA titles on the best settings possible for the money.

I'd rather an NVIDIA card, but feel free to suggest AMD if you think its the best I can get for £300. Also, it has to have 4GB of VRAM.

Please help me, there's so many...

Thanks in advance  :P

As much flak as it's gotten the 970 is still a solid 1080p card.

This is very true ^^^

But in general its easier to find cheap 290s :)

Oh no doubt! But NVidia fans will enjoy going that route :)

-snip-

I'd actually grab a 970 at that price! You get to save $100.

But then again, you can also dish out $450 to grab a 780ti for $450... OR sell that 660 for $100 and grab a full 980.

I highly recommend waiting until the 3xx from AMD is unveiled. If you absolutely can't wait I would recommend the R9 290/x as others have mentioned.

970 or 290X, either is well within your budget and will perform brilliantly.

Actually no, the 970s have a considerably lower starting price, and for one with a decent cooler they are pretty much the same. See above.

EDIT: oh you said 290, not 290X. Never mind.

I will admit that the 970 is the finest 3.5 GB card on the market at least ;)

Since the last 500 mb are 5 or 6 times slower.

I would wait a couple months for when amd's r9 300 series come out (they come out in quarter 2 of 2015). A bunch of people are recommending the r9 290 and gtx 970. The r9 290 and 290x run a little hot so personally I wouldn't get it, and the 970 is having VRAM problems when getting up to using 3.5 to 4.0 GB of VRAM.
