i5 or i7?

LayaR

Is it worth getting a I7 4790k not for OCing but gaming and streaming/skype?

If you're not going to overclock, then a Xeon E3 1231V3 is identical to a locked i7 with no iGPU and cheaper.

IMHO yes it is because the i7-4790K is ''overclocked'' by intel it being a binned CPU that run's at 4ghz and 4.4ghz boost out of the box...yes.

You can just go in the bios and force the boost across all 8 threads in a single click and have that chip running at 4.4ghz full time rather easily also.

pairing an i7-4790K and a cheaper H97 motherboard does make a lot of sense for gamers IMHO as this won,t cost much more than say an i5-4690K and a good z97 board and a cpu cooler.

BUT keep in mind the i7-4790K it being so agressively clocked out of the box will run very hot under the stock intel heatsink...aftermarket CPU cooling is recommended (hyper 212...30$...perfect)

pick another motherboard man..this one is SO SO SO overpriced...look for an MSI Z97 Gaming 5 motherboard instead it has all the essential features this rog board has but for a much more sensitive price.

EDIT: there you go, MUCH better powersupply as well...this one is top of the line it's built by superflower and use 100% japaneese capacitors...much better than the corsair RM:

This system also now have support for dual GTX 970 in SLI (650w would be cutting it real close...750W G2 is perfectly fine for dual cards)

4790k + h97 board? Wouldn't he have to upgrade to a z97 board if he wants to overclock later?

Remember a wise man once said, "You'll most likely hear/see more bad reviews from products than good, because if they get a good product, they won't bother to write a review, and if they got a bad product, they'll complain about the product" ~ SoftenButterCream

re-read...

yes a Z97 could probably get him to 4.6ghz if he got a good cpu...maybe 4.7ghz but how much would 300mhz make a difference in real use? negligeable.

anyways this guy seem to have budget for Z97 he picked a freaking ROG board man.. :P

yes you can...this is why i say overclocking on the i7-4790K is more than optional, it's not needed.

intel has clocked that chip so high out of the box that you just can't squeeze that much more out of it anyways.

Would the VRMs on H97 boards handle it?

yes because the 4790k is binned and reach thos high clocks with still what is considered to be ''low voltages''

the ''not so great'' chips are sold has i7-4790.

some h97 board will obviously handle it better than others...the h97 pro 4 from asrock for example has nice heatsink on the vrm and mosfets and should have no problem handlig that cpu (it can even overclock it after a bios update i think)
