the fact that the Tesla is just a bunch of 18650 batteries(most commonly used in laptops) is a matter of supply. they are about the best you can do for high capacity per size, weight and per dollar when you need such immense volumes.

they are also pretty common in drill battery packs, USB batteries, flashlights and nicotine vaporizers

true, but you could also say that laptop batteries are just really tiny tesla batteries.

thats because batteries are batteries, and many rechargeable batteries are the same "type" (aka using the same li-ion technology and size)

 

so it would be more correct to say that laptop batteries and tesla batteries are usually made using the same type of rechargeable cell.
