GPU not running at full capacity

Go to solution Solved by Swndlr,

#bottleneck?

So for some reason my GPU isn't running anywhere even near 50% or higher when I'm playing games.

Games like League of Legends and CS:GO lag.

My Setup

MSI A88x-M

A10-5800k

EVGA GTX650 SC

Patriot Viper 3 8GB 1600MHz

ehh that's all that's relevant I believe.

But yeah, when I'm playing games like those mentioned before I only get around 20% usage (measured using MSI Afterburner) and I only get up to around 60FPS spiking down to around 20 at times in League and maybe if I'm lucky 30 in CS:GO. I usually get more around 60-120 in games (big gap cause of different FPS caps in games) back when I was using an Asus P8H61M-LE/CSM and an i3-2120.

I can get 100% usage when running something like Unigine Heaven, and probably other stress tests work, but in real world use for whatever reason it doesn't seem to be working the way it should be.

Usage is usually around 20-30%

Have you checked the CPU usage when playing games?

That's anywhere from 30-60% occasionally 20-80% but it's pretty rare,

Check if you have vsync on or a max frame rate set.

Vsync is off and I'm not getting anywhere near my FPS caps well, the only one I have on is for League and it's set at 80, and I'm only getting around 30FPS

might be cpu bottlenecking

I don't think so though, cause with the i3 it was fine, and the core clock on the 5800k is higher than the 2120 so I think it should be fine.

Like I honestly don't see how a 4GHz CPU would bottleneck my GPU when previously I was running an i3-2120 which I think has a coreclock of about 3.1GHz?? maybe a bit higher.

amd has a lower instruction per clock so comparing clock speed wont work an i3 is much more powerful than the a10 like way more powerful

Mmm is it really though? Idk, I see some benchmark numbers where people are using the 5800k and they're spitting out numbers close to 60 with newer games.

Check your usage, temps, etc.

Are your drivers up to date?

And also... is your monitor plugged into your GPU, not the motherboard?

Latest drivers and... yeah... DVI is plugged into the card not the motherboard o-o Usage was mentioned earlier temps are like, for CPU it's around 30-50 GPU is 40-50 celcius.

Anyways, any suggestions as to where to go with this, cause if I really wanted to I could probably manage a return on the motherboard and CPU. I could go for the 860k. I really have no clue what to do at this point though cause if I do return the stuff I have to pay 15% restocking and if I do that would it make more sense to grab an FX-6350 and a different board?? I really do want more cores cause I work a lot with media stuff, but I'm a student so I don't exactly have a lot of money either.

...That or I could see if my old stuff is still around and wait till I have enough to pick up something like a 4670k and a new board.

EDIT- Turns out it was bottlenecking. Found all my LGA1155 stuff, went back to the i3-2120 and no problems.

FX platform is dead

you are better off with your current FM2+ mobo

you can just pick up the Athlon X4 860K

but before your return the A10-5800k

update your BIOS first to the latest one, as the 860K is only support with the latest mobo BIOS

Definitely your CPU. Its actually an APU and they never really play nice with discrete graphics.
