960 vs 280X vs 280

tigerx95

Hello all,

yet another topic about the GTX 960  :D

So, I have a GTX 550 Ti now, and a 450 Watt PSU from FSP.

Now I'm really doubting about the choice between all the above GPU's.

I currently play on a 1080p monitor, and I won't change that in the upcomping years.

Preferably, I don't want to change my PSU either.

So what's the best choice in your opinion?

960: €220

280: €212

280x: €235

For that price definitely the 280x. It's significantly faster.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

280X is better but if electricity is very expensive where you live go with GTX 960.

a 280x WILL NOT WORK ON A 450 WATT!!!!!!!!!!!

I7 860 @ 2.80 GHz

Get the 960 then. An r9 280x is reccomended to have at least a 550w psu if I can recall. And your CPU has similar power consumption to the core 2 quads. To be on the safe side get the 960.

Well then, how about the 280? Will I need a new PSU for that GPU or not?

If you don't want to buy a new PSU, then I'd recommend the 960.

of course it will will. i've got a 7970 sitting next to me folding on a psu with a 450w 12v rail. overclockers were selling 2 of them with a free 650w psu. its a 250w tdp card.

Well then I'll probably go for the 960. You have to admit, what's the frame difference between the 960 and 280x? Maybe 7 fps, in some games the 960 will even perform better. Is that really worth €80 extra? (PSU + GPU)

Without considering the price of the PSU the r9 280x is a no brainer. But considering the price of a new PSU the 280x is worse than the 960 in terms of price/performance.

Ok thanks!

I'm still doubting which brand I should get. The ASUS STRIX looks pretty good, at a fairly low price and of course super silent.

The Asus strix is probably the best version of the 960. Price premium over the reference is very small and you get good temps, very silent performance ,a back plate and to top it off it looks badass.

960

The 960 is... a meh card. It's barely a step up from the 760. The R9 280 ALONE will beat the 960 in almost all games. The R9 280x is a mid range card, but is a beast compared to the 960.

The 280 doesn't beat the 960. They trade blows. In this case the 960 is better since he has a rather low power PSU.
