R9 290x vs GTX 980 (at current price points)

BMARX123
Go to solution Solved by i_build_nanosuits,

So if the GTX 970 and R9 290x are at the same price, it is better to go with the 970?

the R9 290X is slightly faster than a GTX 970 at 1080p and if you pump the resolution to 1440p or higher the difference between the two gets even bigger...the R9 290X is also usualy cheaper.

BUT the R9 290X consume quite a bit more power than a 970 and if you plan on going dual GPU's...dual R9 290X is hard to manage...so the 970 would be a better choice.

in short: more performance, single GPU config : R9 290X

dual GPU config : GTX 970

I have been looking into upgrading my graphics card, and have been considering either the 290x or 980. Currently I have a Radeon  HD 7970 Ghz Edition card. If I can get the MSI R9 290x Lightning Edition for around $350, is there that much of a performance gain to go with the 980, which I have found for $480? I'm no sure if the increase in performance is worth the extra $150?

Get a 970 instead, it's just as fast as a 290x once overclocked and puts out a lot less heat as well as runs on much less power.

Just because we've had bad luck with it doesn't mean the performance wasn't good though.  The lightning is still an insane performer, just hit & miss with the LED it seems.

From everything I've read and heard, the GTX 970 seems to be the better buy. UNLESS... you are thinking of using FreeSync instead of G-Sync. Sounds like FreeSync monitors will be a little cheaper. Just something else to keep in mind.
