Best Monitor for The Moneys

GodSpoon

Im thinking about upgrading from 1080p, should I just wait for an affordable 4k monitor? or get 1440p? or get an ultra wide?

Horsepower isn't a problem, but money is  :P

I'd be doing a little of everything, with gaming and some light/occasionally heavier content creation.

Thanks guys :)

Horsepower IS a problem when 4k is concerned :P

personally I am waiting for the 144hz 1440p IPS panels - the holy grail IMO

If you want the most virtual real estate for the money, add 2 more 1080p panels

If you want sharper details in games , look at a 1440p, 4k is so much harder to drive and games don't run on it that well.

As for the content creation side, 4k is a benefit.

So you are tied between your two goals :D

Im going to upgrade when the 300x series finally decides to show up :P so again not super worried about horsepower, not going to be playing AAA titles at 4k anyways

I have been really considering a 1440p monitor, just not wanting to get bummed out by display density.

Thats what I was thinking, I really like the sound of having so much real estate on a single monitor, and I really don't want to buy two more 1080p panels haha

Ultrawides look so attractive, the LG one linus reviewed seems solid, but its pretty expensive in my terms..

SNIP

4k scaling in windows is still shit so that might be a turn off

1440p is a good balance of sharp visuals, tons of screen real estate, and compatibility

Im torn between that and an ultra wide, which do you think would be better in the long run?

Ultrawide support is still very limited, and pretty shit for games unless you love black bars, but great for productivity, in the few games it works in, its nice

I would avoid the cheap korean panels

Asus PB278QR? AOC Q2270PQU or something like that (its what I use)

if you can wait there are 144hz IPS 1440p coming but no word on price

Thanks, ill probably wait on them then, even if I don't get one the prices will probably drop due to the new panels and competition anyways. And Ces just dropped an assload of free sync panels

That'll be nice, 4k just looks fantastic! And It actually does atm, tried it out off a live usb drive and it by default, set to a much better scaling level on my mbpr, didn't even need bootcamp drivers :D

Nah I meant Win 10 scaled really well off the bat on my mac funny enough, but yeah OSX and Windows are good in their own respects. Scaling def had more time put in for it in OSX
