is it worth changing to intel

Go to solution Solved by Luke,

it's just for gaming and I got an amd r9 280x games are running fine howeever (holds my breathe) if I upgrade my gpu in the future I'm assuming it's gonna bottleneck because of the processor I know some I3's out perform it

No point in looking so far ahead. Game with the FX-8350 and enjoy your computer as it is and if there comes a time a time when you need an upgrade there will likely be new hardware to consider buying and prices will be lower on current hardware so future proofing your computer now in whatever way is just a waste of money.

Hey so I was curious to know is it worth changing to the x99 platform from my amd fx 8350 I have already got the amd system up and running :)

Not to X99 for gaming. What are you doing with your machine?

For gaming, no. For extreme rendering, yes.

If your 8350 is NOT giving you enough performance, and you already have an R9 290/GTX970/something equivalent or better, then it would be worthwhile to switch to a 4690k/4790k.

I mean, what do you define as "worth"? Do you have the money, is it gonna break the bank?

If you're wondering if it will outperform the fx8350, it's a no contest.

unless you really are a huge enthusiast, probably not or you would already be certain

but if you make a living where faster rending times are helpful to you, maybe, but only if you're rendering things.

Definitely not for gaming...

if you video editing, recording, streaming, or 3d rendering and you have a lot of money then yeah

for gaming you should stick to Z97

Depends on the rest of your system and what you do on your computer. If you are gaming with something like a GTX 770 and only game with gerneral use(like web browse, documents, etc.) then I would say no, but if you render videos and other intensive tasks then it might be worth it.

x99 will give no benefit over a 4790k for gaming... like... not really even the slightest unless u count the 1-5% difference which is considered the just natural error of benchmarks

for now....

That said I went Z97X and 4690K cause I am not rich LOL.

X99 is still an awful platform for gaming. It performs identically to a 4790k (at the same clock speeds -- which aren't always achievable) in 99.99999% of games yet costs a hell of a lot more.

X99 is not for gaming this is the purpose of the Z series.

@OP just get a 4690k and be done with it i7 if you do hardcore rendering.

Stick with your 8350, if you find that AFTER you upgrade to a more powerful gpu that the cpu can no longer keep up, THEN upgrade to an i5-4690k (or the i5-5670k -- if it's released by then).

Note* the 5670k is what I'm calling the yet to be announced/released unlocked Broadwell i5, and will perform pretty much the same as a 4690k -- just be more efficient and with better integrated graphics (i.e. I wouldn't wait for it).

Does the amd fx 8350 really gonna be able to keep up with Intel in gaming even for a few years?

depends on the games. i5 4690k will do fine most games dont even use it to its full potential let alone a i7 4790k or above

Just pair the 280X with an i5-4690K and call it a day.

how long do you think this processor will be able to keep up with gpu's before it bottlenecks :)
