CX500M for 1055t + R9 290?

azorGFX

Hi guys, i'm buying a new graphics card, previously i planned to get a 770/970 so i was not very concerned with the psu and choosed a 500w Corsair which would be good enough even after i upgrade my cpu to 8350. Now i finally have the money to buy gfx card and i can get 290 about 100-120$ cheaper then the 970, but i'm not sure if my psu can handle it + OCd Phenom. I run my CPU at 3,5 without overvolting (1,375 core; 1,5 ram).

Rest of my specs:

  • Windows 10 64bit
  • Corsair 230t
  • Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0
  • Corsair CX500M
  • Phenom II x6 1055t @3,5Ghz
  • CoolerMaster 212 evo
  • Radeon HD5770 1gb
  • ADATA 2x2GB 1600
  • Samsung 840 evo 120gb
  • Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200RPM

Windows 10 64bit ? Really? It's not stable yet dude!

Better get Windows 8.1 from g2a.

I would still go for a better PSU. like a 650W.

EDIT: Check this

Intel Core i3 2100 @ 3.10GHz - Intel Stock Cooler - Zotac Geforce GT 610 2GB Synergy Edition

Intel DH61WW - Corsair® Value Select 4GBx1 DDR3 1600 MHz - Antec BP-300P PSU

WD Green 1TB - Seagate 2.5" HDD 1TB - Seagate Barracuda 500GB - Antec X1 E.

Personally i'd get more than 600W, I overclocked my gpu and cpu and get bluescreen sometimes... which I suspect the psu wasn't able to deliver enough wattage to the components

Edit: My clocks were stable when running tests but I realised that i have not run cpu and gpu stress test simultaneously... which maybe why i do not see blue screen even when running burn test for half a day.

Don't think the PSU can handle that. Wattage isn't really the problem.

Get 600 or a gold certified 550.

I saw my friend trying to run a FX-8350 and 280x toxic on a Corsair 500m PSU. It would restart under load. He then bought a Seasonic 550W GOLD and everything was fine.

maybe get 600 watt at least, just for longevity's sake. that CPU isn't exactly efficient.

also, corsair CX PSU's are the cheapo budget line-up (Channel Well Technology is the OEM for the cx500m i believe), might want to find something a bit more durable.

Guys, don't forget that i own a 1055t. Even overdlocked (at stok voltages so impact on power consumption shouldn't be effected that much) it will still bottleneck the 290 to the point that it will run at around 60-70%, i can even lower its voltage and clock speed for now as they won't be used as much until i buy a better cpu. I know i have to upgrade my psu, i'm planning to put in this system another 290 and an FX 8350, i will need 800-1000w psu for that configuration, i recently (end of summer) bought that psu becouse the one i used was a noname peace of crap and i will upgrade it in the future, it just doesn't make sens to upgrade it first to 500, then to 650 and then to 800-1000 and i don't have the money to buy it now anyways, if i had more money i would buy GTX 970 and there would be no problem. Besides, the power consumption of 100% loaded 290 is ~ 254w and it will not work on the 100%, my cpu at 100% without oc pulls ~125w, i don't know how much with the oc but i always can disable it.

Considering all this, will i be able to run my current PSU with the r9 290 for the next half year to a year until i get money for the 8350, another 290 and the psu?

@kameshss:

I was bored with the windows 7 and i don't like windows 8, for me w10 is pretty stable for now.

It will probably be fine, if you really want you could decrease the power budget for the 290 in Afterburner or CCC.

8350 will bottleneck a single 290 in a few games (like FC4), and will bottleneck two 290's in very many games at 1080p and some at 1440p.

I highly recommend you don't go with an 8350 if that's your plan for the future.
