My idiot friend

My idiot friend cleaned his intel stock heatsink yesterday, removed it, didn't re-apply thermal paste..

What's the worst case scenario? his computer is still working (I have no idea how it hasnt overheated or something yet)

Worst case scenario is CPU burns up and dies.

the CPU will throttle if it was to overheat, usually resulting in the CPU to turn itself off to prevent damage.

Worst case scenario, the CPU gets damaged due to over-heating.

tell him to reapply his thermal paste, better safe than sorry.

It will auto turn off if it get too hot. The worst thing is probably decrease the life of the cpu.

When people say 'friend' in a situation like this, they usually mean themselves. It is just a way of shifting the embarrassment of a mistake to a fictional being.

I joke, I joke, just tell him to re-apply the thermal paste and hope for the best.

Dude, it was just a joke (as was mine) There is no need to get offended and react in such a childish way.

Worst case scenario, Nuclear war. If this does happen, I don't think that your friend can solely take the blame for it though.

When the cpu gets too hot it will start to throttle back. If temp continues to rize it will throttle further (to the point where windows seems sluggish) and if it continues to rise after that it will reach a threshold called TJ max (I believe) where it will trigger a system shutdown.

(I once forgot to plug in my watercooling pump ;))

If he is not overclocking, there is 90% chance nothing will happen, the intel's stock paste is terrible, so having one on makes things 5 degrees cooler at max, he might see a few degrees more in the summer when full load, so just tell him to buy a new paste and apply it just to be safe. THe paste helps dissipate heat faster, since intel one is so bad i would recommend for anyone to just reapply a new paste, thermal paste is cheap, there is no excuse using intel one

Modern CPU-s throttle down when they reach a temperature that could damage the CPU, so in other words they are tard proof XD

Do you think this is what happened in Chernobyl? They forgot to add thermal paste and the nuclear reactor went kaboom... :O mystery solved!

It's not a mystery of what happened, the *stupid* workers there were doing an unauthorized test on the reactor, so, of course, they completely removed the coolant water and the whole thing exploded. The even worse thing was that they didn't tell anyone, and the world only found out when a geiger counter went off in Switzerland like a couple months later, lol. They should've watched more Linus videos and know how to apply thermal paste properly! :P

Well, unless he has been running prime95 constantly for months, like this. Nothing is likely to have been damaged.

If it's a sandy bridge processor, it can actually run w/o hitting thermal limit.  I did it on a G630, peaked @ 91*C on Prime 95.

Well half of that is true. :)) I have minor dyslexia.. :|

We don't have trailers locally in the Philippines so if You want to own a trailer you pretty much have to be loaded. :)) so that's a compliment I guess. :))

Peace bro! ^_^

Contact between the CPU and the cooler won't be as "snug" that would entail higher temps. Burning out the CPU over time. Though if he would replace the thermal compound why not get a hyper 212 or something that's cheap. :)
