Hey guys, after 3 good years of enjoying my Phenom II 960t, I've decided it's time for an upgrade. The three CPUs I'm deciding between, to pair with my GTX 970 are, the i5-4690K, FX-8350, and FX-6350.

I'd obviously like to save money if I can, though, if it's decided the more expensive one is indeed necessary then so be it, I'm open to AMD and Intel either way, I don't really have an bias. I've read lots of reviews about all of them, and it seems that even the 6350 might make a decent gaming CPU, but, I have no actual experience with it, so.. I play modded Skyrim a lot, as well as Far Cry 4, AC:Unity, and Battlefield 4. I also intend to upgrade to a 1440p monitor in the future.

I know that Intel is better in the per core department, though AMD brings some very good value to the market.. And, this may be a vain reason against the i5 but.. I love ASUS, but I really dislike the gold motherboards they have now for the Z97 chipsets..

Anyway, thanks in advance guys.  :D

I'd get the i5-4690k.

If your only reason against the i5 is the gold color scheme of Asus' motherboards there are still some options out there. Go with the Z97 Sabertooth, Z97-AR, one of the Maximus VII boards, or another brand like Gigabyte.

Otherwise

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

Actually, I've seen several benchmark videos where the 8350 and 4690 are neck and neck.

And the 8350 is about $60-70 cheaper.

There's one game where the 8350 beats the 4690k, and that's in Dragon Age Inquisition and it's by 1-2 fps.

There are many games where the 8350 performs very poorly, and in those games, you'll be wishing you had a 4690k. MMOs and games like Arma 3/DayZ are generally at a MUCH lower framerate (20-30) than Intel due to the 8350's lack of strong cores. The 4690k performs admirably in every game, unlike the 8350.

@Faceman can you copypasta.

RIP in pepperonis m8s

It's not the Tek Syndicate one is it?

Something is wrong with their benchmark methodology.

Anyway in multithreaded a 8350 is 10% faster than a 4690K at the same clock.

In 4 core or below tasks a 4690K is 90% faster than a 8350 at the same clock.

Most tasks use 4 cores or below.

Yeah.. not too long after I made this post I found this video:

That pretty much sealed the deal for me, I'm willing to pay the extra bit for that performance increase.

(Also found a ASUS Maximus VI Hero Z87 on sale for $115.  :D)

Not a bad choice. Just keep in mind that Z87 boards may require a UEFI update prior to using Devil's canyon CPUs.

But with USB BIOS Flashback on ASUS boards you can do that without any CPU/RAM installed (pretty nifty imo).

Yeah thanks for the heads up, I saw on some of the reviews people mentioned they had to update the BIOS before it worked properly.  :)
