Why AMD is so important?

I am new to the PC scene however my knowledge in general economics and business tells me one thing about the PC industry. We need AMD for one simple reason; they compete with Intel. This is massively important because without AMD intel could be charging 700 bucks for an i5. No matter what you feel about AMD or Intel, we need both of them. If AMD were to stop making processors we would be screwed, think about it. If only one company sold processors we would have to buy from them if we wanted a computer. Simple put if AMD goes down, or another competitor doesn't appear we are screwed. The whole another competitor would appear thing is a very unlikely thing to happen considering how expensive it is to make processors let alone buy the machines to assemble them. Bottom line we need AMD.

If AMD disappeard and Intel was the sole cpu producer, then I'd put my money on Nvidia/AMD doing something with their GPUs to completely eliminate the need for cpus (at least for gaming).

ok...why do we need this? I know we need competition but AMD really isn't cutting it anymore. The fact that they have stopped investing in CPUs has allowed more funding to their gpu R&D.

And they are currently the best for parts being cheap yet powerful even though their CPUs are quite old.

We need AMD to create competition and so Intel isn't a monopoly and they sell osme pretty good CPUs with a cheap price tag.

Its a shame Cyrix got bought by VIA, they forced intel to keep their prices low if they wanted to compete. (Its wikipedia but a good read. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrix)

Intel would not charge $700 for an i5 because then nobody would buy their processors, and that would completely stop advancement in new technologies, which is not what intel wants.

Not everything is about money money money in this world, and (most) large companies understand this.

 

Also another thing is that if intel became a monopoly charging $700 for an i5, it would be easy for other companies to rise and make less powerful but cheaper CPUs that people could actually afford. This would then turn into new competition, bringing down prices again because people would pay less for cheaper CPUs than $700 for an i5. This is why even if AMD didnt exist, intel would not increase the price of their CPUs by 400% since that would basically make them go bankrupt.

I wouldn't hold my breath because that isn't changing anytime soon.

That's one thing people forget, AMD is competing with 2 different companies at once.
