Computer Building Class?

Go to solution Solved by EChondo,

It's really up to you. $10 a hour is reasonable and not that bad, especially if you do know what you're talking about and can give great advice and guidance.

So I was at a Christmas party and for some reason computer building came up in the conversation. Turnes out, another guest has a son that wants to learn how to build a custom computer. He's around 16 so I agreed to let him come over this next Wednesday and put together a pc from spare parts I have laying around. His mom wants to pay me for my time, but I'm not sure what to charge (never charged to teach someone before, but more money can't hurt).

What would you guys charge for a ~~4 hour computer building session?

That sounds reasonable. I'm in California. Since he's a kid, and I want to teach him anyways I could probably charge 10-15$.

I would do it for free normally, but I'm a second year college student and I do kind of need $$$

I do know what I'm doing, I've done 6 builds for customers already so $10 it is, thanks guys!

While there are courses and tutors charging here and there, I never had the guts to do it myself with something that natural and enjoyable as PC building. I'd go as far as $40-50 for the whole 4 hours, more feels like taking advantage.

Also, be a good teacher and be well prepared, go through the topics in the correct order, have a list of everything so you don't forget, be clear and specific, but keep in mind there is a lot of variants and situations in building. Also, teach him to be independent and self-learned, and don't stablish that much communication after the class, you don't want your phone ringing each time he has to open a case, trust me.

Good advice, thanks. I actually taught myself to build when I was 14. Got on the internet and researched building all summer long. Now 8 builds later and still building strong!

I think I'll go over the components first, then ESD, proper building order, Posting, and troubleshooting a non-posting computer. With the hands-on building part, I think that will fill the four hours. Also, I'll point him to these tech channels and forums. These are really helpful!

Really though, building is all about understanding the value/performance ratio of the parts you're putting into the machine. Anyone can build, but not everyone knows how to shop like a good computer builder.

That is exactly what I did when I built my first gaming pc (and the one I'm using now) :) Now I'm doing a Mac Pro case mod(still need the motherboard tray) and planning to watercool in the future ;)

It's not a bug, it's an undocumented feature!

Second $40-50 for the whole 4 hours because more feels like taking advantage, +first time thermal paste is scary, and extra reminder from setting the bolts behind mobo because I have seen new rig where the "graphics card doesnt fit", ..and I honestly did not expect that! :D

Other than that there is not much to do, and the calls will come you want it or not.
