WD or segate, who do you normally go with, and why?

 

Personally, i choose WD because I've heard that segates aren't as reliable (i have no real evidence to back this up).

I have 5 WD Drives,  3x 1TB Blacks and 1x 2TB Elements, and 1x 2TB My Book.  all 3 of the 1TB drives are about 4 years old, still work perfectly, the elements is 3 years old, and works fine and the book is 2 years old and still works great.


Had to get a new drive recently (Needed more space) and got a Seagate Barracuda 3TB it works fine, but HDTune shows it as "OK" but 2 rows are in yellow... Not sure what to do about that. Heard a lot of bad things about seagate thats why this is my first drive from them. I hope this drive will be ok.

I prefer and trust WD, but there's nothing really wrong with Seagate.

Buy the cheapest for the size and speed (7200 rpm don't do 5900!) and if you truly value that data back it up, all drives die its a fact of life, I've seen all brands die from pretty much any age from days to years if not decades. So back it up it the take home message not spending hours dwelling on which brand.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

Personally, I go for whatever drive I feel like, usually looking at cost to performance etc.

I own 4x 3TB Seagate NAS drives, 1x 1TB WD Blue and 1x 1TB WD Re.

The Seagate drives have a total of over 12 000 hours on them, whereas the Blue has 4000 and the Re probably has around a 1000 hours.

I have 2 WD's with over 90K hours on them. I have a Seagate with over 55K hours on it. I have a Seagate with 5.6K hours on it, with two SSD's that match. What does it mean? Nothing. They work and I'd use either. The biggest thing is matching the proper drive to your needs. Don't use nonNAS drives in a NAS. Don't use eco drives in a machine that's on 24/7 and driven hard. Etc. etc. etc. This isn't rocket surgery but common sense.
