I've deciding that when I eventually have the money, I'm going to purchase the K70 RGB because I like pretty light up things. I was wondering what people had to say about the different switch choices. It comes in blues, reds, or browns. Are there any advantages over clicky v. linear for gaming? I'm planning on going to my local NCIX soon to see if they have any keyboard I can test, but what do you prefer?

I have a K95 with reds.

I really like it, and its nice to not have to hear the loud clicking noise every time I press a key.

Linear is easier to do double-clicking for some, but I prefer the tactile bump of blues/browns.

I like my Browns. As you can see, everyone has their preferences. Don't take someone else's opinion. Get your own. Unless you're buying a keyboard for them of course.

I want something with a tactile feel, because I will use it for some typing. The sound is nice too. The browns take more weight to depress than the blues, correct?

Browns are slightly lighter than blues, 45g for brown, 50g for blue.

Have no fear! STRMfrmXMN is here!

Look at this thread so that you can understand the various switch types. There's also a quiz there that can help you out.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Honestly it really depends on what you prefer. There are sampler kits that you can buy to try out each switch, but if you don't want to buy that then most stores let you try out keyboards. I personally type on reds and game on blues, but neither give me any "advantage" in gaming(I just like the feel of the bump when mashing keys).

If you can't feel something you like in person, try to get your fingers on a switch sampler kit. Of the switch types offered in the Corsair, I'd go with the MX Reds. I kinda feel that Cherry switches are more of a hindrance to gaming, if anything. Someone's always there to say they prefer it, and wouldn't have it any other way. Different strokes. Rollover is cool, I suppose. I'd want to check out that goofy looking new Logitech, too.

I do like the tactile feel tho the "bump" seems to be missing from my Ducky Shine 3 Browns. I don't like the clicky noise from the Blues. The Reds don't feel special enough from a membrane board. The Browns sit right with me. I know when I press the keys and while there's noise, it's not too loud or obnoxious. It feels a lot like the old spring boards of years past. And there's a substantial feeling about the board which is reassuring.

Have a good test of some keyboards and decide from there.

The mech switch guide should help, but also ask yourself what you want to do with the keyboard and what you want to feel while typing or what not (IE, do you like hearing and feeling feedback? Do you want easy double-clicking? Etc. Etc.).

My first mech keyboard was a Ducky 9008G2 with MX Blues, its my keyboard at work and its my favorite. It doesn't have the macro and media control i would like but its by far the nicest to type on, and i'm sure as a casual gamer I could game on it just as well as any other keyboard.

Next I bought a Corsair K95 with MX Reds. I bought it because it was very pretty, mech keyboard and had excellent media controls. I HATED this keyboard, really hated it. The keycaps felt too high and the keypresses didnt give me the feedback that I was used to with the MX blues. One day I had an LED die so I RMA'd it and sold it for a good price.

Next I bought a Logitech G710+ Apart from the orange section I loved this keyboard, It has MX browns with dampening O-rings. great media controls and white backlight. If felt similar enough to my Ducky at work that switching between the 2 didnt feel too different and the rubber o-ring dampener made them nice and quiet. Unfortunately I sold this with my last PC to seal the deal.

I would buy another G710+ for my next project but the orange really urked me, so i've decided to get another Ducky. I will be getting the Ducky DKLE1408S Legend with MX Browns and ive bought rubber o-rings to put in myself.

Hopefully that gives you some insight on my personal preferences. I have bought and lived with 3 different key switches, MX blues are by far the nicest to type with but WAY too loud at  home. I felt the MX browns gave a similar feel but were quieter, specially with dampening o-rings.

:)
