GTX 970 SLI with 600W PSU?

YoshiHDify

Title says it all, I know this is a very ambitious goal and would be considered pushing the boundaries.

But... IN THE NAME OF MAXWELL! Can we do it?

Currently my system:

i5-3570K IvyBridge 77W

2x DDR3 DIMMS 1.35V

All important, PSU:

Silverstone Strider Plus ST60F-P 600W (Peak 700W) 42 AMPS on 12V Rail (Single)

*Also running 3 mechanical HDDs

Most of my components are chosen carefully for power efficiency so will my PSU live to see another day with 2 (Stock/Reference) 970s?

Thanks in advance :)

With ease

I use a 750w power supply with my rig. I might also add a 780's TDP is 250 watts compared to a 970's 145 watts.

I am not kidding you, that is pushing it.

I have the same PSU and it's not even a 600W unit. Amps x Volts = maximum wattage so that means that you only have 504 Watts of power on the +12v rail. It's a shit PSU, I only bought it because it's fully modular.

You can run dual 970s, but I would recommend not overclocking your graphics cards or CPU for that matter.

i would recommend at least 750w, just to be safe and give you some head room.

i bought an 850w (because italy) and that is probably enough for 3 way SLI

its cutting it fine but with 504 watts on the 12 volt rail I think you should be fine.  I would use a wall socket watt-o-meter to check draw power before overclocking.

my entire system (screen excluded) with an overclocked GTX980 draws 340 watts from the wall, this drops to 300 when i run stock (factory overclocked) speeds

I have a 3570K too and have it overclocked to 4.4 Ghz. I have a 600W PSU and thinking of getting a EVGA GTX 970. I think with my CPU overclocked and my GPU overclocked I will probably be fine,

Thanks for the replies guys :)

I've ordered one reference GTX 970 and it's coming soon.

If I do ever get another I'll try it out and it it doesn't work I guess I'll have to change my PSU.

But I just that it'd be cool running SLI on a 600W PSU for 2 beastly cards with Maxwell's power efficiency and all.

I am on a 650w power supply and just finished overclocking my 2 Gtx 970's (G1 Windforce)....

I got a stable 1506Mhz Clock, and 7210Mhz Memory Clock on 100% power consumption.

Heat wise it was well bellow 80c with load : about 60-65c on the bottom card, and 70-75c on the top card.

The G1 Windforce cards are beasts, even without overclocking it boosted to 51MHz OVER the speed on the box!!

With only one card I could hit a stable 1580mhz core clock on 110% power and a slight over volt !!

Sadly in SLI this brakes my 79c thermal limit and was much less stable, still an amazing card for $350!
