I have a question about AMD motherboards; will a cpu like the fx 8320 with on a 970 chipset motherboard? If so, why do people say not to do it? does it not overclock as well? Tek syndicate just made a video using the 8320 on a 970 board so I am confused. Thanks.

ye higher platforms might be better, but I overclocked my 8350 plenty with a 970 board. I would say go for it :)

not every 970 motherboard are up to the task of the 8 core FX CPU but this one is and it has a very nice price tag ATM:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128651&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

The thing is with most 970 chipset boards have cheap VRM and mosfets with only 4+1 or 4+2 power phase design...some are even 3+1...this gigabyte Ud3P motherboard is an 8+2

other options would be the ASUS M5A97 EVO (6+2) and the MSI 970 Gaming (i believe it's an 8+2, it's very good)

Ok, what clockspeed is your cpu at?

Do not get the MOBO Logan suggested unless you have no plans for OCing, and are willing to risk something like this: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/262662-cpu-fried-fx-8320/ Just posted today oddly enough. There are other 970 boards out there that are much better equipped, and still within a similar price bracket.

I got 4.7, I could've gone higher but I was using a stock cooler so you can imagine the noise :P

Wow! I'll definitely go with this mobo and cpu now! Noise isn't a very big issue because I have a gtx 660 with a stock cooler so it will be a little noisy anyways.

Listen to the guy in the post below.

not every 970 motherboard are up to the task of the 8 core FX CPU but this one is and it has a very nice price tag ATM:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128651&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

The thing is with most 970 chipset boards have cheap VRM and mosfets with only 4+1 or 4+2 power phase design...some are even 3+1...this gigabyte Ud3P motherboard is an 8+2

Can confirm that the above is good advice. Power phases matter A LOT on AMD as far as overclocking or even running those chips stable on a 970. The Gigabyte he linked is the BEST cheap option for a decent overclock.

Where AMD loses value? Going balls to the wall overclock on a expensive board with enthusiast cooling. At that point you should have just bought a Z97 cheap board (they all oc fine) and an I5 k and a evo 212 or similar cheap decent cooler.

On that inexpensive Gigabyte board? An 8320 makes a hell of a lot of sense, especially on a single GPU that isn't super high end.

The only caution I would give you is if you want to play games like Guild Wars 2? Intel may be the better option. MMO's are notoriously CPU bound on one core and Guild Wars 2 is probably the worst. If this is for console port multiplayer games and single player games and you are combining it with an AMD card which will pull close to an I5 in Mantle games? The AMD chips are a hell of a deal. They will also do a great job at streaming on a budget and rendering video on a budget.

I THINK WoW should also be fine on a 8320 now. In beta they offloaded stuff to the GPU and it seemed less cpu bound that the previous expansion. Still CPU bound but I THINK an amd 8320 on an OC would play it quite well. My 4770k breezed through WOD beta and the previous expansion could chug.

CPU:24/7-4770k @ 4.5ghz/4.0 cache @ 1.22V override, 1.776 VCCIN. MB: Z87-G41 PC Mate. Cooling: Hyper 212 evo push/pull. Ram: Gskill Ares 1600 CL9 @ 2133 1.56v 10-12-10-31-T1 150 TRFC. Case: HAF 912 stock fans (no LED crap). HD: Seagate Barracuda 1 TB. Display: Dell S2340M IPS. GPU: Sapphire Tri-x R9 290. PSU:CX600M OS: Win 7 64 bit/Mac OS X Mavericks, dual boot Hackintosh.

As do I, but he has to appease his AMD followers, Pistol can't carry the flag with the ridiculousness that is the 9590. At least he's not defending the FX's as good productivity choices anymore lol

HEEEELLO NEIGHBOR! I used to live on the East side, had to move over here for work, couldn't deal with 3 hours on 520 everyday

My out of state plates still haven't gotten me a bill in the mail, and it would add another 45min to one-way time. I was in Kirkland and had to go to the U district.

Well the MSI 970A-G43 featured in that video is basically a fire hazard.

His information about the board supporting SLI was also false.

You would be better off with a 990fx board.

true to a certain extend

but the 990FX are still really expensive board for features like SLi/CF and better sound chip, etc

Yes, they are more expensive but they are targeted to get the most out of the 8core AMD CPUs, which is ultimately what you want when putting together a PC.

if you compare the price of the 8320 or 8350 + the 990FX and a decent cooler cost around 300+

you might be able to get the Intel i5 cpu and a MSI Z97 PC Mate and a normal air cooler and it will demolish the FX in everything

the AM3+ platform is not as good as few years ago

While the Intel platform will "demolish the FX in everything" it is by no means to say the FX is a slouch for gaming.

He could get this and OC the 8320 to 8350 performance and use this to cool it for less what a 4690k and Z97-a would cost without a decent cooler. There is no real reason for him to ditch the AMD line up.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.
