Is Z97 dead?

Hi guys.

I am looking to upgrade my rig within the next few months. If I were to purchase now, I would like to go with the MSI Z97S Krait edition, because the white and black scheme is just, for lack of a better word, REDONKULOUS! And I have an idea for a very nice black/white scheme build.

So my question is this: Would it be a waste to purchase the Z97 system now (with an i5 4690; not looking to overclock; purely for gaming), or even within the next two months, or would it be best to wait until X99 and DDR4 take over?

"Many thanks, friend of friends!"

X99 isn't taking over, it's the enthusiast platform while Z97 is the consumer platform. It's like saying X79 killed Z77. It didn't.

Z97 isn't dead, and X99 won't really take over since it's at it's own price point for certain purposes.

It's like saying that an SLS AMG will take over the Honda Civic. The SLS AMG is at it's own enthusiast price point, and the Civic is at it's own little price point.

X99 won't really take over. Its their enthusiast platform.

Broadwell would be comming soon (The die shrink of Haswell to 14nm) and soon after Skylake.

However the change won't really make a big difference for you anyway. (And with the big change Skylake being maybe over a year away).

So if you find a great deal go for it.

You just hear so much about X99 because this is a High end Forum, Z97 is still a beast Plattform, and atleast 30% of the People buying X99 don't need it, maybe they want it because they like it more or just because it's more expensive. The Krait Edition is SOOOOOOO FREAKIN NICE, I mean kinda nice to look at. Thought about getting it myself *_*

Will I would recommend waiting for Skylake, it will be on LGA 1151 and it will have a major improvement, but the i5 4690 is great and awesome for gaming and would be enough for some years to come, also you don't need X99 and DDR4 for your needs.

Fair enough. Z97 it is! Thanks guys

if you can afford it i'd still go with the i5-4690K even if you don,t want to overclock it right now you might want down the road when the cpu will start to show it's age...you can get as much as 25% performance increase from overclocking so it's worth it for later IMHO.

Both have different buyer target. X99 is for high end load (games of today not included) Z97 is more of a gamer+daily home fun chip .unless you really need to do heavy work or you have money growing on trees don't go for X99 .  A Z97 with 4690K will work for you next 3-5 years.
