Panasonic CM1 - first phone with 1" camera sensor

ShadowCaptain
A Smarphone with the biggest camera sensor, step into the ring Panasonic CM1

Looks like Panasonic are set to launch the worlds first smarphone with 1" sensor. For comparisons sake the Sony RX100 uses a 20mp 1" sensor and this phone is using a similar 20mp 1" sensor from panasonic. The sensor is twice as large as that in the Lumia 1020

The camera also offers full manual and manual focus via the front control dial, you can control apeture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance etc. It shoots in JPEG or RAW and also records 4k Video (only 15fps though, sad, should do decent 1080p)

It should be a low light monster with that size sensor paired with fast f2.8 Leica glass, it should also get some nice depth of field
If this has the camera performance of the sony RX100 I will be IMPRESSED

As for the phone specs, it has a 2.3ghz Snapdragon 800, 2gb of ram, 16gb of storage and micro sd expandable to 128gb. The screen is 4.7" 1080p, the battery seems small though, so I am not holding out for great batery life
The phone is quite thick at 21mm though, so it is a bit of a brick compared to modern smartphones, ... is it worth it for the camera performance? I think for some yes, for others no

It is coming out in Germany and The UK December 1st

Key specifications:

20MP 1-inch CMOS sensor
F2.8 aperture
28mm equivalent focal length
ISO 100-25,600
4K-video
Raw capture
1.1MP front camera
4.7-inch 1080p display
Android 4.4
Qualcomm Snapdragon S801 quad-core processor
2GB RAM
16GB built-in memory
microSD cards up to 128GB
2600mAh batttery

Thickness might be an issue but there is no getting around that, and a proper cover/case will add size, with that said doesn't look bad at all. And if you are going to be taking raws you will definitely need the micro sd slot using 128gb.

Srsly, 4K@15fps? Why would you even add that?

Any unknown button should be pressed even number of times.

A whole 1 inch, ladies.

useful for grabbing 4k stills, think of it as 15fps burst mode

Actually 1" sensors are not 1" in physical size....Idk either haha

They are measured in like tv tube radius sizes or something weird from about 50 years ago.. dont ask why, they basically measure the radius of a circle and the radius would be 1" if the sensor was a complete circle..

Yeah, but they say that is a 4K-video, and 15 fps is much less than industry avera...

...oh god.

Although if that does 1080p@60 that would be really neat.

So Panasonic is finally the pirst to make a camera that a phone too?

I'd buy this in an instant, but I expect a hefty price tag...

What would make my ignore the price though would be compatibility with standard switchable lens' (what's the English word for is? Objective sounds wrong)

That 2600 battery I do not understand.

Edited:

Wait this is a phone right?

yeah they do call it movie, though the previous go pro only did 4k 15fps, I imagine 1080p would be doable at 60fps, it seems reasonable, which would be great, 4k is still not really needed

No samsung did it first with the galaxy camera (although the camera was a £50 point and shoot quality)

Interchangeable lenses , nah its not needed, its got a nice fast f2.8 leica lens, lenses would mean carrying extra stuff around, and it would not go in your pocket with a lens

I agree, the battery seems small

Got any info on how much you'd have to pay for the thing?

nvm, TomsHardware estimates it around 900 euros.

Around 600 euros some websites are saying, which seems reasonable. I mean the price of a high end smartphone and sony rx100 would be MUCH higher

This MIGHT be a game changer... only problem is.. its panasonic... but maybe Sony could make an rx100 phone

I bet it's gonna cost a lot. Could be as high cost as high-end phones while the phone itself is perhaps a little medicore. Plus it looks fugly IMO, but if the price was right, I would buy that.

I don't think Sony will make something similar. I mean their phone cameras are already quite good (although manual controls would be nice), but I guess they still need to sell their high-end compact cameras. Though more phones like this and it would be all better, more competition to bring the prices down and all...

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

Yeah I think this could be an interesting space, it would 100% put the nail in the coffin on point and shoots

That, or it would make them even cheaper.

Not all point and shoots are bad, but a lot of them are.

99% are pretty meh, there are some decent compacts (Pentax MX1, Sony RX11, Canon G16 etc) but those £100 point and shot cameras are absolutely pants,

Yeah along those lines, but without the silly heavy zoom lens, and without a terrible tiny sensor (assuming this sensor is good)

...

Why would I pay >600€ for a camera that's not a DSLR?

I meant I'm down for it if it's a 300 to maybe at the very most 500€ I've already paid way to much for my m8... don't ask.

My iPhone 6 was more than that... also that is a ridiculous ting to say, there are some great small cameras that are NOT DSLRs that cost 600, sometimes carrying around a dslr is impractical

it says it's a 20M

megapixels are irrelevant, this sensor is 4x larger than the one in the samsung camera

As a phone that looks horrible. People are going to think you're walking around with a dedicated camera.
