[Anandtech] ASRock with first onboard 10GbE get your wallets ready

capawesome9870

10Gb LAN? Is that even commercially available?

ALso that Quad 16x holy shit

Cat6 is 10Gig upto 50m and Cat6E is 10gig upto 100m.

The switches are expensive as shit™* though and the nics are also very expensive.

*(Affordable meaning $1000, 12 port switches being $2000 and 24 port being $6000)

The cables are easily capable yes but you can't really get 10Gb internet commercially

Of course you can't, You need an immensely expensive router to handle it.

It's all about the ridiculously expensive LAN network.

ASRock was first formed by Asus to compete against low priced motherboard makers like Biostar and Foxconn. Of course they got a bad rep back then because they simply were built to be cheap.

These days they are good though, and are competing on the mid and high end as well. For example the ASRock Z97 Extreme4 is a very good choice for an LGA 1150 build.

Perfect motherboards for a workstation, I can put in 4 titan blacks or 980's and network a few of these together to create a pretty decent renderfarm for not too much money.

Well, Asrock isn't the first motherboard manufacturer with 10GbE, ever heard of Tyan and SuperMicro*.

*Note: While it is true that Tyan doesn't make desktop boards, SuperMicro  does, but none of their 'core' boards have 10GbE.

That being said, there are motherboards in the ATX and E-ATX form factor that have 10GbE lan and use the c612 chipset and is compatible with i7s, such as: http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C600/X10SRA.cfm

That's not  not 10GbE, it's 10Mb/s. It does say the USB 3 ports is upgradeable to USB 3.1 which is 10Gb/s via BOM upgrade option for OEMs only.

About the board, if it cost that much, I would rather have GIBC/SFP connectors.

Perfect for a render rig. Lots of available PCI-E slots, 2x 10GbE without sacrificing expansion slots and all the other bells and whistles that x99 comes with.

Given what dual 10 GbE network cards cost on their own, this board is actually a pretty good deal even if it costs ~$800-900 like Ian Cutress speculated.. For a professional who needs two 10 Gb ethernet ports without sacrificing a PCIe slot for an add-on network card, this could be a lifesaver.

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

To who is this targeted to?

A person who's into computers and drives a lambo?

people who spend $1000 on their CPU and $400 on their RAM.

Shame it had to be AsRock, now that they've switched to that unbuyable colour scheme. There's a reason MSi motherboards and Z77 ASUS boards go straight into the trash when I buy a used computer with one (which is budgeted into the value proposition to begin with)

@Zeke go eat a cactus, AsRock is a fantastic motherboard maker, and they know how to save money without sacrificing life time for budget boards, unlike MSi (MSi's FM2 entry-level boards have a 99% RMA rate and a 1% explosion-with-result-of-death rate*)

There are some sketchy mobo brands but AsRock is not one of them.

*exaggerated, but they are truly spectacularly shitty.

Because of blue? And black? Sadly your mistaken my friend for ROG red and MSI Red and black look utterly over used and bland for color's in a computer. Who wants all there computer's to look the same color wise? I personally use a blue z77 MSI board in a white case. Nothing wrong with blue. This Asrock board also looks great! Wonderful colors rather than just Red and Black.

Are you drunk? Not 10GbE? On the motherboard I linked to it clearly states: "Intel® i210-AT Dual port GbE LAN"

The USB 3.1 thing is a different matter.

Blue and black is this generation's beige. (80s kids will know)

Red and black is not much better though and is taking over.

I vastly prefer metallic colours, pure graytone/ black/ white or even MSi's yellow + black that is on the Mpower boards. Which is why I was extremely annoyed at AsRock when they stopped using their very nice copper/ brass colour scheme (which looks a hell of a lot better in person than it does in photos) and went to an uninspired design like that.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

This is a workstation motherboard and people keep calling it useless, overkill and badlooking.

Rly, did you think that such motherboard was built for a regular consumer? gosh...

Also, ASRock is a fcking solid motherboard manufacturer. I don't understand the hate

The amount of jimmy's that have been rustled because this board doesn't say ASUS on it.

But when it comes (the ASUS version), the jerking will be hard.

My girlfriend cried so hard when she found out there was no more Gigabyte Green Gaming board. I think companies that have something like a interchange able heatsink or motherboard design would bank. I understand your point, but not everyone is a fan of pure metal's.
