{rumor} Nexus 5 Production Ceased.

dizmo

I put rumor since there's no official release from Google, but...

While not entirely official from Google, an XDA Developer member received an email from Google stating "I inform you that we don’t offer new brand replacement as they aren’t available and won’t be produced any more" when he inquired to whether or not the 32gb model would become available again.

Sad day. This could be the end of cheap vanilla Android phones direct from Google.

I believe they see Android One as their entry level device, and will use the Nexus brand from here on out as their more premium offering.

Motorola fills the mid range void with their Moto G, as do numerous other companies.

Prices for high end Android devices are falling rapidly, and seeing as Google now has a very significant share of the market they might not see the need to lose money gaining market share; it can now spread more word of mouth.

Personally I think this sucks. I think they should have kept the Nexus 5 along side the Nexus 6, as not everyone wants a behemoth of a phone, and Android One is a little too low end for my taste. Glad I picked up a Nexus 5 when I did.

I do, however, see the reasoning behind it.

Curious, will those who have Nexus's continue to support them by buying much higher priced phones, or will you now go elsewhere?
Perhaps Motorola, or a Chinese manufacturer that offers similar performance at a lower cost?

CyanogenMod can be quite buggy.

lg g2 + cyanogenmod is a better option than a lg nexus 5. however its sad couse not many ppl wants a 6'' nexus phone. and that price tag...

an 2014 nexus 5 is seriously needed

Couldn't agree more.

I voted no because without the 5 or a new replacement in it's price range I'm not interested if they release something else similar to the 5 pricing with updated specs I'm down but they can shove their 6

but the software is so much better and more customisable(I do have a nexus 4 +7) i just prefer cyanogenmod for double tap to wake and swipe to wake, screen brightness control through the notification bar and encryption, art runtime and being able to use a ps3 controller with my phone.

while all those reasons are true (i have a OPO, so i know how awesome CM is) but 5.0 fixes almost all those 'problems' except the PS3 thing,

I'm used to running buggy software so i dont really mind tbh. well it's not too much effort to flash 5.0 and then when a release of 5.0 CM change back again.

I don't see prices on the top of the line phones falling at all. You still need to pay 600+ dollars for a Snapdragon 805 phone. We see the last generation phones falling in price but the Nexus 5 was top of the line when it was released.

Fucking hell Google what is your problem? The Nexus 6 is very polarizing so you need the Nexus 5 for those people who want something smaller. The Nexus 9 sucks balls and you're going to replace the Nexus 7 (extremely popular Android tablet) and Nexus 10 (one of the few good 10" tablets, although outdated as hell now) with it? Are you out of your mind?

Whoever is making the decisions for the Nexus division needs to get fired because he/she is doing a terrible job. They are abandoning their successful products/formulas and are going with one doomed to fail.

Was interested in getting a Nexus 5 after my DNA craps out on me, but I guess not.

Looks like I'm not going with Nexus anytime soon, especially with their phone prices being $600+.

GG Google.

It would be a stupid thing to do for Google now that they have a great Nexus line up especially the Nexus 5 is still needed for those that don't want the massive Nexus 6 and I'm sure both will sell equally well since they target different markets really.

That might be fine for a Mobile power user, but that's not a good idea for the average person.

First off: If you don't know what rooting is, you probably shouldn't do it. Most Android users do not know what rooting is, and therefore shouldn't do it.

Also there are inherent security risks with rooting your phone. Again, nothing a Power User can't deal with, but for the average consumer? Not a good idea. I know plenty of less tech savvy people who buy Nexus.

I think they're likely just testing the waters. They have more than enough money to absorb any kind of failure this may result in, and simply gain it back with low priced devices next year, if this is what the market shows that it wants.

If the market shows that it's fine buying fewer devices, but at a higher price point? Then that's likely what they'll do.

They already have massive, massive market share. That's what they're after, so I'm thinking they're going to try and actually make some profit on devices this time around and see what happens.

You never know unless you try.

As long as the Thread Title clearly says "Rumour" then who cares? What's the harm? It's cool to discuss upcoming rumours, and see which ones pan out and which ones are fakes.

The only issue I have with rumours is if someone posts a rumour without clearly labelling it as such, and then tons of users think it's "confirmed news" and freak the fuck out.

No reason for the Nexus 5 to get a refresh really, still runs like new for me; even on custom ROMs. /shrug.

Its not only about software. The phone is cheap as f%#k for the specs :) and is under 5" (big selling point for me).

@dizmo i totally agree with u on keeping the N5 as value option.

I bought mine 2 weeks ago, was a pain to wait for "white 16gb EU" version seller on amazon (dont trust ebay ppl) for sub £260. By this time next year there will hardly be any unused ones left. But hopefully something as brilliant as N5 was at its launch will rise meanwhile :)

A Oneplus One is an even better option, in my opinion. Cheaper than the nexus 5, better specs overall, great battery, great camera.

The only reason why I'd see someone go with a nexus 5 now is to really need/want day 1 updates.

Well for you, if you see it labelled as Rumour, then simply skip it. No need to go into the post you have no interest in, just to say it isn't something you're interested in. If it bothers you, then report it and move on.

Also the second bit, well if people are doing that even after it clearly says "Rumour", then that's not your (or my) problem, and there is nothing you can do about it. Some people will overreact no matter what.
