How long do you think the GTX 970 will be good?

2spukie4mee

I've started a build where I'm buying parts as I get the money. I wanna jump on the 970 for Christmas, but the rest of the build might take me a while. How long will it be that great of a card?

Depends on what resolution you play, what fps you want to achieve, what titles you play, how demanding the games you will play in the future will be, ...................

I think 1 year or 2 if you won't upgrade your monitor.

1440P monitor are getting so cheep, and 4K is getting better. In 2 years, 1440P will replace the 1080P(I think). AND VR....

Those years is the revelation of resolution. Even 980 can't run 4k at everything max.

depends on resolution... 1440p will probably have it last 2-4 years.

Depends on what you want. I'll say 4 years or so?

The only thing it depends on is your own requirements. The card itself can last a decade when maintained, but depending on your requirement it might loose all value in less than a years time.

Buy all or at least most things at once!!!! Don't buy part per part because if 1 thing is dead by the time you install it you will lose the moneyback guarantee..

This will sound silly, but there are literally so many reasons why it being a great card could change.

Short story - it will last as long as your usage requirements remain the same.

It will most likely stop maxing stuff out at 1080p after 2-3 years.

Depends on the resolution you game at, If you game at 1080P then 2 years I'd say based off of past cards I've had, If you game at 1440P then maybe a little less as that's more demanding.

I see the 970 more as a 1440p-oriented card, if yo're playing at 1080p you'll be fine at least 2 years. The card is maxing out games gettig awesome FPS right now.

Seeing that the 670 is still a solid card, the 970 should last a lot of time.

Find me 3 popular games that have no SLI or CF support from the last year.  Triple A titles please, no indie stuff.

Alien Isolation has issues, It had to be patched in, Not sure of any more though, Probably will be more but you have to remember  not every game does multi GPU setups that well.

All games that are releasing now have SLI/CF support.  If there are issues they will be patched shortly or you can disable a card for the time being.

Another few games with lack of multi GPU support is Wolfenstein: The New Order and RAGE, I think those are problems with the ID Tech 5 engine though.

EDIT

Oh and also Titanfall, The Elder Scrolls Online and Dark Souls II didn't/don't officially support multi GPU setups, Titan Fall does now but it took them 4 months to patch it in as the engine didn't originally support it, Same goes for the other 2 AFAIK.
