*whining* on a brand new 980, unsure how to diagnose the actual issue.

Unclescar

Edit: I seem to have confused coil whine with shitty fans.

Thanks for the tip. It is definately coil whine, and I've contacted EVGA about the issue. Hopefully things go well.

I have an EVGA reference 980, obviously its pretty new as they were just released. I bought it from Microcenter the day they became available, and am out of the 30 day return period. Being the genius that I am, I passed on the extended warranty. Maybe I'm mistaken and can actually exchange it, please correct me if that is the case.

So all that aside, my current situation:
My video card has a weird "whine" sound to it, but I really don't think it's coil whine as it doesn't ramp up with the fan, it's immediate and generally high pitched.

It is very minimal and nearly unnoticeable during normal desktop use, such as web browsing, and luckily it remains minimal and nearly unnoticeable when I do audio work or any recording, though any sound at all is unacceptable as I built the machine to be as close to silent as possible. While on the desktop, though hard to hear, it fluctuates between a few pitches.

Yes I have good airflow and all other parts perform as expected. Fans are on highest RPM they can go without being audible.

It only happens when certain unknown criteria are met, and its been fairly consistent with when it happens.

Most noticeably when i'm playing Minecraft, and when i'm playing WoW. In MC it happens when I look down at all, and the farther down I look the louder it gets. In WoW, its loudest at the character selection screen, and oddly enough, it changes pitch and volume as I switch which character is selected. It doesn't happen often while playing, but it does get louder as I look higher or lower.

Strangely in both games it is much quieter when i look straight ahead towards the horizon.

Like i said before, it is consistent and always goes to the same pitch and volume for each character and looking around always yields the same results.

I'm stuck and can't find any info about a situation like this.

If relevent, other parts are:

5930K + Corsair H110

Asus x99 Deluxe

16 (4x4) Gb Crucial 2133 Workstation DDR4 RAM

Corsair 840 Evo 1Tb

Corsair HX850i

RMA it. If you don't think it's coil whine, then it's defective. Has to be one or the other.

Coil whine is not caused by fans.  It's caused by capacitors vibrating when current is passed through it.  The more power it's taking in, the higher the pitch.  Turn on V-Sync for a temporary solution.

There still should be a manufacturer's warranty.

And coil whine is not from the fan. It has to do with power, and is generally caused by inductors and capacitors and whatnot.

Yes limiting the framerate will limit the power needed.

This video shows why I hate it. It changes with the framerate or power drawn, and almost sings to you.

Warranty on an EVGA 980 is 3 years. Contact them directly and they'll sort the issue. Though it might just go away with time.

I suppose I misunderstood coil whine and confused it with shitty fans.

This is exactly what I'm getting.

I'll get in touch with EVGA and see what my options are.

It isn't bothersome when i'm using headphones, but if it picks up and finds its way into my mic when I'm recording, THAT is when i'm going to have major issues with it outside of the annoyance.
