Windows 10 Gets Linux Style Package Manager

Well, Microsoft seams to be doing all it can to make Windows 10 the dream OS for everyone.
A feature that was discovered, however not yet announced (so probably doesn't work right at the moment or unfinished), is Package Manager.
The package manager is accessible via the admin PowerShell command line window.

The package manager is called OneGet. OneGet started as a side project for Windows 8.1 with Windows Management Framework 5.0, which you had to install. Now, the side project become now part of Windows 10.

You can search for packages, add new sources/repos, uninstall packages, install packages, and so on. I have yet to try it, as I am home, but I will later tonight.

To find a package, you can simply type and execute: Find-Package -Name <Name of software>

To install one, you do: Install-Package -Name <Name of software>

 

To get the list of all commands, simply execute: Get-Command -Module OneGet

Keep in mind that this feature was not announced so far, so it may not make it at the final release of Windows 10, and that like everything else in Windows 10, it is work in progress.

installing apps via command line is one of many reasons linux isn't main stream, though i do like linux a lot ^_^

it just wants to eat it's market share, take all that is good about linux and add that to windows :)

Imagine if Windows became Linux and Linux becomes more like Windows.. Doubt it will happen, but I bet they will copy plenty of features from each other overtime.

Well sort of, it isn't mainstream because of programs and gaming, windows is no. 1 there. But Linux is not bad at all in terms of command line installs and .make etc. I use it as the main driver on my laptop (since I don't use it for gaming). Got Ubuntu on it, hate Unity? Well that's great because there is plenty to choose from, I chose Cinnamon and it is awesome. Doesn't tax the GPU with effects (my GPU overheats), runs very smoothly, very customizable, good looking etc. It runs better than Windows Xp & 7 on my old laptop so it's perfect. :)

I think the idea of Package manager is that it would kill Ninite, basically. Scripts can be made, and install all programs at once.

This is great for those that re-install often or wants to accelerate the process.

 

It could potentially open doors for enterprise to setup their own package manager distributing their own software to make computer deployment easier.

right way maybe but it's not user friendly. I installed ubuntu on my laptop and i spent more time tweaking and getting little things to work like suspend, changing my DNS servers (as it hung on to my home one which obversely won't work in college) and so on.

 

also installing on windows is easy.

 

download program > double click > use

 

linux:

 

download program > right click and allow to execute > run  > type in password > use.

Maybe Nadella wasn't lying when he said he loves Linux. Glad to see Microsoft moving in the right direction.

And Linux based OS (beside Ubuntu) wants to be like Windows so bad since 1990's. Which is sadder? One that has an identity, or one that can only replicate one, and have none (Beside Ubuntu, once again, due to it's GUI and kernel modifications enough to be different enough)

some linux distros probably will try to emulate windows a bit (some do, like Zorin OS and Mint to a certain extent). the cool part is, there is so many to choose from, and it's open source, so you can change anything you'd like. add your own features, etc.

Plus they run on almost everything. Interesting Android runs off of a Linux Kernel too.

If only Wine could work perfectly or with only a bit of overhead.

Would jump to Linux in a heartbeat. (Windows on Main Desktop, Linux Mint on Laptop cuz its a potato)

 

Personally love the terminal in Linux, there are actually many things that you can do with command line faster than with a GUI and sometimes access features not even in a GUI.

 

Downside, you pretty much can't game.

right way maybe but it's not user friendly. I installed ubuntu on my laptop and i spent more time tweaking and getting little things to work like suspend, changing my DNS servers (as it hung on to my home one which obversely won't work in college) and so on.

 

also installing on windows is easy.

 

download program > double click > use

 

linux:

 

download program > right click and allow to execute > run  > type in password > use.

Go to website to download program > Click on a fake download link by accident > Go back > Download again, this time making sure to click the right link > Go through setup and install a toolbar by accident because you clicked "Express install" > Finish > Close the readme that popped up because you didn't uncheck it before you hit finish > Close the program so you can remove toolbar > Remove toolbar > Run > Yes, I'm sure I want to run this program, don't ask me again > Use > Forget to update the program until a year later.

 

Linux: Go to your favorite package manager > Search for program > Download > Run. When you update the system, it updates the program too, so no forgetting.

Well, Microsoft seams to be doing all it can to make Windows 10 the dream OS for everyone.

A feature that was discovered, however not yet announced (so probably doesn't work right at the moment or unfinished), is Package Manager.

The package manager is accessible via the admin PowerShell command line window.

The package manager is called OneGet. OneGet started as a side project for Windows 8.1 with Windows Management Framework 5.0, which you had to install. Now, the side project become now part of Windows 10.

You can search for packages, add new sources/repos, uninstall packages, install packages, and so on. I have yet to try it, as I am home, but I will later tonight.

To find a package, you can simply type and execute: Find-Package -Name <Name of software>

To install one, you do: Install-Package -Name <Name of software>

 

To get the list of all commands, simply execute: Get-Command -Module OneGet

I think some people are overlooking an important part of an package manager: dependencies and updates.

 

For example, over time as software gets updated, older dependencies (I'm looking at you MS C++ redistributables) become depreciated and should removed semi-automatically. How about when someone uninstalls a program but its dependencies are leftover, doing absolutely nothing but wasting system resources.

 

Another example: programs that leave behind tainted or modified registry entries. Why keep registry keys that aren't being used? All they do is slowdown the lookup speed of Windows' registry.

 

This can essentially lead to programs being more 'compliant' in regards to older depreciated software being automatically managed and take care of, just like on Linux!
