Intel's Haswell retail chips hotter and slower than expected

vrb747

Apparently, Haswell retail chips run hotter and slower than pre-production samples that were provided to four British PC manufacturers.

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/382267/intel-haswell-hotter-and-slower-than-expected

One company said that it had overclocked pre-production chips from 3.5GHz to 4.7GHz or 4.8GHz with ease, but that "40 or 50" retail chips had been impossible to overclock beyond 4.2GHz because of the high voltages and unsafe temperatures involved.

Not sure what i have to say of this.. Seems like a weird occurence.

Intel wouldn't gimp themselves in the ass by releasing 'golden' pre-production samples to hype up people only to fall flat. Yet at the same time, why does this happen? Production errors?

This was confirmed by Tom's Hardware & Logan from Tek Syndicate, the review samples were cherry picked.

But... why? This seems like a foolish move to take, esp with the letdowns & backlash they'd receive afterwards

Guess it's up to AMD with their Steamroller to not disappoint now steamroll intel now.

AMD should make a trailer for the Steamroller release, but instead of 4 dudes fighting with swords, 8 steamrollers crushing everything in front of them.

I'm not, I never planned on it, but a few enthusiasts given out about it and not buying a product is different that a heavy fine from courts and it being public shaming.

2H 2013 most probably in december after Kaveri release. I will buy the super awesome sabertooth am3+ and cheap fx 6300 ( it' even cheaper now) and wait for 28nm. 15-20% over 8350 @ the price of 8350 will be nice.

This is one of the many reasons why I prefer to take my business somewhere else.

I havent trusted Tek Syndicate since the video they made showing "benchmarks" where the FX-8350 doubled the performance of the i5-3570k. (Dont get me wrong the 8350 is an awesome processor, just not double the processor the 3570k is. That kind of result is well into the bull range)

I would hold out a couple months so all the first users of Haswell can start reporting in and not just first look benchmarks and "anonymous pc manufacturers"

If this is true, it will come out in a more confirmed manner very soon

He didn't. Quote Sfobrien52 so your comment can be seen, otherwise he might not get to know the truth.

Please quote me if you want me to see your post about my post, otherwise I may lose track of the thread and never see it.

I'd love to help, but I'm probably gonna' have to ask for more info before we can get anything done.

Most certainly will be compatible. Maybe there wolud be the 1000FX chipset with pci-e 3.0 but nothing exceptional. Even Escavater should be compatible (AMD said that future cpus will remain compatible before a strong apu+cpu unified socke will be released ).

Heh, glad I'm not building on the Haswell platform. In reality, does this make Haswell worse than Ivy overall?

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

Probably puts it on par.

Haswell I believe is clock for clock 10% faster than Ivy, so basically if you can get your i7 4770k to 4.4GHz, that's more or less equivalent to a 3770k at 4.8GHz.

Wonder how much of this holds for the mobile processors. Probably not as much -shrug- won't know until more Haswell laptops are out.
