"Computer" Water Pump? "Garden/Aquarium" Water Pump?

Hi LinusTechTips people!

Can I set up Water Cooling with "Aquarium Water pump" for 10£ that is exactly the same as "Computer cooling/water pump" regarding Litre per Hour, Voltage and even look but the price is 100x less than for original "computer" water pump ?

I mean why should I buy Water Pump from Computer Store for 60£ when I can get one in garden Store for 10£ and its the same. ( Just the cables need 5min of work )

(Newbie / Excuse my English )

Theoretically it would work, the only thing im uncertain is how the pump will perform in a restricted environment, i.e rads/cpu blocks are lot more flow restrictive than open hoes in the garden

Think about long hoses. I have seen people do that. It is not pretty, but it works like a charm. And BTW could you please change your profile pic :D (gives me shivers everytime)

For 10pounds you might as well try it imo, connect the tubes with the rads/cpu/gpu blocks and see what the flow is like.

Also another think i just thought, i dont know if itll be as reliable

Let him try it. It is only 10 pounds afterall. Draining a loop if it does not work is no biggie.

Well yeah but if the pump dies, bad things happen

That's how they did it in the old days... Ghetto-rigged aquarium supplies, DIY waterblocks, and recycled car rads...

It is really hard to fry components these days. With all the safety barriers. It would most definitely shut down before breaking. And that is how watercooling started.

Go for it, let us know.

On the other hand.. I've had aquarium pumps all my life (fishes and a few tortoises) and they've all been loud enough that I would never want one anywhere near my PC.

350 LPH is also hardly anywhere near the 1500 LPH a Alphacool VPP655 can push.

As said it will work, since this is what was used early on when there wasn't specially designed watercooling pumps, the only issue is pressure since most aquarium pumps are optimized for water flow and volume not pressure/restrictive water flow thorough waterblocks. If you want to you can use an aquarium pump, I suggest a purpose made pump but if you do want to try, find one with higher pressure.

You want to check for the pressure, otherwise you may fuck shit up.
