If you have a good sound system, you'll probably benefit from a dedicated sound card, and it will be significantly different from on-board audio. Personally, I don't need it, as I don't have any fancy audio equipment.

It will depending on the quality of the media that you are playing, for example if you play 128kbps mp3 you wont notice any difference, but if you play losless audio such as aac or flac, you will definitivly notice a quality improvement.

"PC" branded speaker solutions aren't that great. it is in headphones where cleaner audio sources become more 'visible'

It makes music a lot nicer on my Sennheiser 558s. I don't really notice a difference for anything else.

I only have a xonar dg with some fairly cheap speakers and a decent pair of headphones and the sound is much better. Linus said to pick a price range and get a xonar. I think that is sound advice.
