What do you think of ctOS?

OriginalPromise

I like how it is possible to have a debate here without it descending into a PAINS tournament (Public Angry Internet Nerd Slap-fight).

Also, I have messaged the op and asked if he could add a poll to this about which side people of the debate people fall on, it might be interesting to see (not in terms of selecting a 'victor' , just to see what other people think).

Ahh.. I'm with you on that one, i hate latching on to a singular (non evidential) idea & defending it like an angry ape all the time & not seeing a reasonable & fair outcome , i like having a fair & well organised trial with both sides having equal oportunities..regarless on what the mass percentage shouts & hate @ the accused..

regarding poll ,as this thread is already starting to go back into the "old" threads section isn't going to be effective i believe, probably should've been effective when the thread started.. maybe 10-15 votes max at this time, plus site traffics low as of now..

Details separate people.

Problem?

It was an extreme example, but an appeal to hyperbole often is a useful way to convey a point, all the understanding of analogy, yet none of the issues with how far is to far to carry it.

No it's just funny because in the US it's quite common to own 20 guns and shooting people randomly happens all the time...

Also, nine times out of ten people going crazy then starting a killing spree/ planning terrorist attacks leave some kind of advertisement/warning of it within social media, if someone posts 'god hates America and they should all burn' on Facebook, and their browsing history is full of 'how to mix explosive for dummies' then I hope someone is watching for it.

Finally, these are just surveillance/evidence gathering tools, any charge based on them must still be proven in a fair (note spelling) court of law, do you doubt that due process is undertaken within your judicial system?

This is what I think the future (ctOS) should be like. In the game Watch_Dogs, ctOS reached over basic human rights. (Privacy)

Surveillance should be limited, and the individual himself should have access to all the evidence the system has gathered related to him.

The individual should also have the right to get some of the content removed upon approval; and the approval should be given out by a program, not a human being.

"ctOS" should be implemented only if the coding is flawless (non abusable/hackable), with an efficient and safe process/system to guarantee errorless (not free) surveillance.

I think an implementation of anything like ctOS is better than nothing, as the argument can be related to Google's self-driving car.

The self-driving car won't be perfect but machines that runs on calculations will be safer, reliable, and predictable than human nature.

Would it be a success? Yes, since it is statistically better than what we have now. It is indeed safer.

I also added the poll to this thread. :)

I see your points of what would be necessary, but most of these already addressed under such acts as the asio act that govern these organizations:

If evidence is used in trial, it is available to the defense, in most other situations such material Is not actually retrieved,

And there is a statute of limitations/ maximum time that data is allowed to be stored and used in, don't forget how much space it would take to store more than a few days worth of stuff. Also since most of it is from their public domain posts, then they are free to remove them on their social media whenever they wish, if that organization (aka, Facebook) so happens to own that data, then the user should have acknowledged that and been more careful before the posted to insight a jihad.

Having said that though, for taking out one/small group of people, my hunting bow would probably be more useful, silent, un-registered, untraceable and is rare enough that there isn't probably any easy way of identifying it (unlike rifling in a gun etc)...

We also have the liberals, and labour, and shoddy internet access though, which is a pain.

Its not like something already has everything about you in a data base somewhere right?

This is indeed a scary future, that we're going to have to accept because there is no stopping it.

You could always live in the bush/woods/forest like a caveman. This is my plan according to how things play out in the future.

What state are you from? Elizabeth quay is an absolute waste and the way the nbn has been goofed up since the liberals got it is ridiculous, having said that though at the time labour was just being a huge cluster fuck.

We should probably try to avoid derailing this thread though...

It's definitely possible.   We have the technology to create a ctOS-like network today if we wanted to.... in a curtain way it already exists as we have a lot of CCTV cameras all over the place. I believe what's holding this kind of project back is privacy concerns and budget.

I don't know if the idea of ctOS is good or not... it has it's advantages, but it also has many many drawbacks.  I'm unsure about it to be honest.

I hate the idea, but it will probably happen at some point in the future.
