Not worth IMO what cooler you looking at?

im looking at the sapphire ones. (Tri-X most likely)

also, to perform a Xfire, do i need the exact same card or just model wise?

Not even close to being worth it. The x is like 5% faster. I don't even understand how they sell 290xs

TriX and vaporX are great. For xfire the cards need to be the same architecture. so no they dont need to be the exact same card :) though im not sure about performance if you where to mix say a 270 and a 290 just better to get 2 290's though the cooler does not matter at all

The GPUs need to be architecturally the same, so a 290 and 290X won't be able to CrossFire.

Though a 7970 and a 280X can.

It use to be possible on First Gen GCN but I don't know about now

just get a 290 and overclock it to heck! save a little for a better cooler.

The Vapor-X is the best cooler for the 290 and 290x period Tri X coming in close as second, unless you want to overclock that is, in that case 290x is on sale at overclockers for 270 pounds (reference design) you could put some kraken g10s on it.

yeah.. im not confident in replacing the cooler on GPU's let alone CPU's lol

for now im looking to OC a 290 to a 290X's performace

MSI 290x lightning is supposed to be one of the best 290x's and the memory on the card was tuned by AMD themselves. However I couldn't say if it was worth it over a 290. If it were me I would probably buy a 290 and OC it unless you need as much power as AMD has to offer and are worried about not having enough. Why don't you want a nvidia card?

Edit: You could even go with 2 r9 290s for about the price of a 290x :)

The R9 290x, compared to the non X version, is only a tiny bit more powerful, and IMO is not worth the price. I got an MSI R9 290 for 1080p 60Hz gaming and it was able to reach the top FPS perfectly fine. In most games I could run on ultra and have 60FPS consistently. The R9 290x isn't really worth the extra money. One of my friends got it and the performance difference wasn't that different compared to the R9 290.

290 runs cooler and unless your doing crazy overclocking with like the lightning then go with the 290 any cooler from sapphire or xfx is the best especially the vapor-x from sapphire

Yes they can. They have the same architecture with a few minor differences.  All that will happen is the 290X will be underclocked to match the 290. ;)

@HJX2 - If you overclock a 290 by about 100-150mhz you basically have 290X performance +/-.

Grab a 290 realy, the performance diffrence is so minimal maybe 5 fps avarage.

You not gonne feel that in real life.

Its not worth the extra money for a 290x imo.

I would grab the Sapphire 290 TriX OC.

The Vapor X has a better cooler yes, but again it cost allot more then the TriX ~ $30,-

Again not worth it for 4 degrees cooler on avarage, and 2 fps more imo..

Unless you realy like the design of the Vapor X with its backplate, and lights, and fan disable option.

i gonne steel @Kevmo7 video again, i hope he doesn´t mind :D

ive had nvidia my entire computing life and want a taste of the unstable dark side.

after that i might consider nvidia or AMD depending on how my xperience is with it.

but i will say, the current card i own is a GTS 450 so icant say much... plus they cost quite a bit more
