Where do i test my network ping

after a horrendous Dota2 game with 500+ ping i need to know if it's on my ISPs end.

I don't want to wind up on some dodgy website to find out so i'd like to ask you what you use.

(Btw, i'm with virgin media and they've been terrible recently anyway (the gadget show speed test gave me 15Mb down and 0.48 up (my advertised is 4x that and is normally acheived))

Try a tracert to Google (or, any other 99.9% uptime establishment.)

Well, the ping seems fine. It could be the Dota2 servers but the game was fine for my friend.

I think it could just be my really sh*tty upload. I normally get around 2.8 not 0.8

Then there's my download which is half what i normally get.

Worst of all even people like @DanBull are having problems with virginmedia recently and they aren't responsing at all. Internet isn't cheap and apparently not worth servicing after a whole week.

Do you know the IP to the DOTA server(s)?

If so, try a tracert on those.

What's a tracert?

Also the dota servers should tell me the ping when i go to server selection so i'll try that first.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traceroute

basically, you open a command prompt, type "tracert xxx.xxx.xx.xxx"

where you replace the "x"'s with an IP or domain such as Google.com or 74.125.228.1 (google's IP)

You can't really trace Dota2 server IPs because they aren't physical. Dota2 uses P2P to host servers. Also Speedtests ping tests aren't that accurate. Go to CS server which is either in your area or 500km from there. Thats closer to your real ping.
