Sure, I've had everything under the sun thrown at me as well, but not ever on the same scale. Girls literally get lewd messages for saying "hi" on TeamSpeak. I've never heard of this happening with dudes. Ever. It probably has happened, but it's a regular every day thing for a girl playing games. Or girls blogging, or making YouTube videos. It shouldn't be excused because "oh that's just how Xbox live is"

Here's another thought: out of the 20 or so celebs I knew who 2 of them where: Jennifer Lawrence and Kristen Dunst, who has done plenty of nudes before anyway so who cares. I really think this "scandal" and constant bitching is actually just a fucking publicity stunt by these celebrities: It might not be as pre-planned as those "OMG somebody leaked my sex tape! Btw if you sell that video I want royalties kthxbye" but they're certainly riding this nonsense for what it amounts to 2 to 3 crappy candid pics per celeb mostly.

I'd say the severity of the messages are about the same. Girls get lewd messages and guys gets threats and insults.

I would disagree. Your analogy implies that the "threats and insults" are exclusive to men. The reality is, it is not; women get a fair share of them as well. They then also get the lewd messages (and the likes of it) on top of that.

So the severity is not the same. Granted, it is a lot better than the ye olde days, but we, as a whole, are not quite there yet.

I don't really get the hype. If I searched for porn on the internet right now I could get pictures of more attractive women who also are being filmed taking it in the ass or something.

I've heard quite a bit of hyperbole one way or the other on this issue ("It's the celeb's fault!  Fuck famous people!" -Well not really, someone actively stole their photos and distributed them.  "This is the same as physical, sexual assault!" -Well not really, um, at all).  I'm kind of enjoying this series of events if only because I'm really intrigued by new ethical problems of the 21st century.  This wasn't really a thing that could happen a century ago.

For the pictures themselves, they are clearly private photos and I think it's pretty creepy to be sharing them.

I didn't imply that at all. Women get threats and insults, and men get lewd messages as well.

I do think the severity is about the same. I mean, "you sound hot, are you hot?" and "I am going to kill you!" are both harmless comments made but some random person on the Internet.

I really don't see how women have it harder than men on the Internet, unless you're under the disillusion that women are unable to ignore mean comments like men can, or that women are somehow more fragile and need to be handled with extra care.

The vast majority of conversations on the Internet happens over text as well, where there is absolutely no need whatsoever to disclose your gender.

I hide the fact that I am a lolicon in certain situations because I think it will have a negative effect on how people view me. If you are a women and think that being a woman will cause people to treat you unfavorably then don't disclose your gender.

People love hearing about/watching celebrities for some reason.

Well, I had some insight to that recently. Depending on the celebrity, it feels like you grew up with them in some cases. Take Robin Williams. His movies are movies I've enjoyed since I was a kid (Aladdin for example). Yes, I didn't really know him, but he was a gamer (He played Quake which is hilariously awesome), a comedian who more than likely used his own life to inspire his comedy, and someone who I enjoyed watching in general.

These types of things make people feel a connection with celebrities even when there isn't really one. Almost like you do really know them even if you don't. Robin Williams is the extreme because I couldn't imagine anyone else filing that specific nitch (comedian, alive making films/shows for a long period of time, gamer, etc.), but I guess some people feel that way about it with other celebrities.

I guess it's also part of association. You liked some character who they played, so when you know they played that character in that show/movie, you attribute that adoration for the character for the actor as well. At least in some parts. That's different of course, since in Robin William's case he was a comedian so sometimes he was just playing himself.

I don't think any of that excuses the crazy celebrity worship culture the US has, but at the same time I can sort of understand.

We can agree to disagree.

Yes, they both exist, I agree with you there. When you are talking about volume, thought, that speaks a somewhat different story. Also, the comments may look harmless in the perspective of the poster, but the viewer(s) does not always see it the same way.

I really don't see how women have it harder than men on the Internet, unless you're under the disillusion that women are unable to ignore mean comments like men can, or that women are somehow more fragile and need to be handled with extra care.

This boils down to psychology. They are not more "fragile" than men, but they are generally more sensitive to what is going on around them. It is not always visible, as some are able to put a poker face, but at the end of the day, the issues still annoy them.

The vast majority of conversations on the Internet happens over text as well, where there is absolutely no need whatsoever to disclose your gender

This skews the numbers a little bit, but it is different from IRL conversations, which is another component of the overall issue.

I hide the fact that I am a lolicon in certain situations because I think it will have a negative effect on how people view me. If you are a women and think that being a woman will cause people to treat you unfavorably then don't disclose your gender.

Uh.... Okay...? That is a smart move to make, but the fact that you "need" to do it at all is a red flag for me. Women are not irregular beings, but hiding that identity tells that some people truly believe otherwise. It is not an overall society, but the vocal minority ruins this perception.

Yes and that's what I was talking about before. Women get more lewd messages and men get more threats and insults. It's not like you get attacked more or less depending on your gender on the Internet, but the type of "attacks" are generally different.

This boils down to psychology. They are not more "fragile" than men, but they are generally more sensitive to what is going on around them. It is not always visible, as some are able to put a poker face, but at the end of the day, the issues still annoy them.

So what you are saying is that under the same amount of abuse, a women will feel more hurt than men and we should therefore be more considerate when talking to them? That if anything sounds like sexism to me. And no I am not trying to strawman here, you said that they are more sensitive.

If I think you're stupid I will tell you what I feel, no matter if you're male or female.

This skews the numbers a little bit, but it is different from IRL conversations, which is another component of the overall issue.

I am strictly talking about the Internet here. The type of people who send threats and/or lewd messages on the Internet would most likely not say the same things face to face.

Uh.... Okay...? That is a smart move to make, but the fact that you "need" to do it at all is a red flag for me. Women are not irregular beings, but hiding that identity tells that some people truly believe otherwise. It is not an overall society, but the vocal minority ruins this perception.

I need to do it because people are pre-judgemental.

I never said anything about hiding their gender. What I said was that they don't have to disclose it. What I meant was "just don't mention your gender unless someone asks", not "hide your identity, lie if someone asks".

Let's take this forum as an example. We have had members put "girl" in their username and tried to tell everyone that they are a female as much as possible. Then there are reasonable people who don't feel the need to bring it up. Guess which one is more likely to get treated differently because of their gender?

It's the same in games. Most communication in games is text, so people can't figure out your gender unless you actively tell them. Why would you tell them though, unless you want attention? If you truly think that women get more abuse on the Internet than men then simply don't bring your gender up. That's all I am saying.

How often do you see people go "yes I am a boy" and how often do you see people go "yes I am a girl" before someone even asks? I've seem 0 cases of a guys doing it, but many many cases of girls doing it in games like WoW. Chances are that a lot of the "girls" doing it are actually men, but if women really got a lot more crap than men on the Internet solely based on their gender why would a guy pretend to be a girl? If women really was in a worse position in games why put yourself at the disadvantage?

I just don't buy the whole "ohh women have it so tough" on the Internet deal. Everyone has it tough regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, interests etc. The differences are that some people deliberately puts themselves in bad situations (hi Anita), and some have thicker skin than others.

this discussion is still going on? seriously? it's been off the trend for like 3 days ago..media(social & targeted) is just digging it up & making a bigger mess of it, i think the general public made it worse that it is, situation should've been contained from the outer rim or from a general aspect before it spreaded too far, now they all just hyped it off like it was something to be seen but should'nt be seen , sorta guilt trapping people everywhere which social & visual media has always been doing, it's kinda like cancer it couldn't be stopped in a way but we could've delayed the progress, we poured it out there like it was 'something' , now were just staring at a dying victim being eaten alive, thinking it's their fault in the first place(maynot or maybe), Human nature is devilishly ironic..we want interesting stories to hear everyday , even if it isn't interesting, we like to twist it to unique piece of 'art' .

Details separate people.

On another note, the celebrities are not abusing the DMCA to make people remove the images.

The reason why I said they are "abusing the DMCA" is because in a lot of cases, it was not them that took the image. A lot of them were taken by their boyfriends so they don't actually own the copyright.

It's like me sending Total Biscuit a DMCA takedown notice because he used content from a Blizzard game. If I don't own the copyright then I shouldn't be able to take it down.

It appears that we agree on some of the key points, but there are details that we do not see eye-to-eye on. This is why I said above that "We can agree to disagree".

I will end the conversation here on principle of not derailing this thread further, but we can continue on PM, if you wish.
