Upgrading GPU because I purchased without researching....

JlOlSlH

So to make a long story short I recently just built my first system back in January and I am pretty happy with it currently. However, the GPU I chose for the build is not performing how I thought it would and I am looking to upgrade it to something better. I have my eyes set on either the 290x Tri-x, 290x Lightning Edition or an equivalent on the Nvidia Side.

This being said I do have a system geared towards AMD products, one because they were much more affordable and two because... well just because.

Here is my system specs (just in case they are needed)

CPU:  AMD FX-8320 (Air Cooled)
MOBO: Gigabyte 970-A
RAM: 8gb Sniper
GPU: R9 270x Dual X
PSU: Generic Best Buy 500w
HDD: WD 1tb
SSD: EVO 120gb
CASE: AMD Thermaltake

**(I am also aware that I am going to have to upgrade my PSU for whatever card I decide, so if there are any recommendations on that as well I would greatly appreciate them!)**

He's got a 970 board.

You should still get a better PSU. Anything is better than generic best buy

absolute cheapest PSU I would get is the corsair GS700, otherwise try to get a gold rated 700+ wattage PSU with a single +12V rail and good reviews.

290 is a great card. Thats what I would go with.

Go SeaSonic if you can in terms of the PSU and I would get a 290 with a decent cooler or a GTX 770, especially if you value frills

You can get a 290x for cheaper than a 6GB 780 but the 780 cannot even outpace a regular 290. You will never need more than 4GB Vram unless running really high reZ.

The MSI 290x lightning edition cards are really good but expensive for the same price you could get a 780 Ti.

The 290x and 780s are around the same price so you could get either one. I guess which one performs better in the games you play most. But both should max any game no problem.

For the Power supply any of the good brands like Corsair, EVGA and Seasonic will do.

What resolution are you gaming at? How much are you willing to spend what country are you in (for purchase reasons)?

I always go with the long term benefits of a higher efficiency power supply whenever possible. Seasonic when I can. So I'll recommend the SSR-750RM.

If your comfortable with the prospect of buying used there are a large number of used 290 and 290xs for sale around the interwebs at some ridiculous prices.

IF not then buy a new 290/290x. Why not go all AMD?

Cheers

Get the evga 1300 g2 if you can get the rebate with it. I got my lightning on amazon for 599 and got 60 off for applying for their credit card. It tops the best 780s and most 780 ti cards.

GTX 780 instead of a R9-290X?!? What the -- I don't even...

The R9-290X out-performs the GTX 780. The GTX 780's performance is more comparable to the R9-290.

There's also no point getting a 6GB GTX 780 for one 1080p monitor.

For the PSU a SeaSonic ~700W PSU would be the best option, but if you can't find it I suggest a Corsair CX700(get the M version if you want modularity) or a be quiet! Pure Power L8 700W PSU. As for a graphics card the Tri-X sounds like a good idea to me. Great cooling, amazing performance, plus Sapphire is a pretty trusted company.

Sorry for the late reply on this thread, school work is madness... But I am gaming at 1080p on a 27" monitor. I may want to upgrade to a 4k monitor sometime in the near future but as of right now I am happily content with this.

I'm going to be gaming at 1080p, however I probably will upgrade to a 4k monitor in the near future, and I have been looking around at power supplies and I really like what the EVGA SuperNOVA seems to offer, although I still haven't researched enough into it to make sure it is what I need.

I am probably going to go with the Tri-X after looking around at some different places. I found one for 400$ on ebay and a used card doesn't really bother me too much. I just have to figure out what power supply I am going to get.

Absolutely, if I get my new card and PSU purchased within like... the next 2 months (hopefully) then I will happily mail my old card to you.
