So for the past few hours I have been thinking my computer is toast. Had a lightning storm last night and for some reason I don't have my rig on a surge protector. Later on I find out it wont boot or for that fact post. I decided it needed to be cleaned anyways so I completely tore it down. While putting it together I inspected everything to make sure there weren't any blown caps or anything. Once back together it just continued to do the same thing. Left for lunch came back in an hour or two and my rig was booted and waiting to be logged in. Definitely a weird issue, I thought it was toast but apparently not.

Anyone have any horror stories regarding their computer?

Yeah, one time I was working on my computer went to go downstairs, with my hard drive, and dropped my hard-drive down the stairs, that completely killed it. Luckily I had a back up from a few days earlier so I didn't lose much. Also for the last couple of weeks my internet has been basically unusable, dropping from 50mbs to less than one, all of this because of a squirrel that chewed through a coax cable (It took 2 weeks from Comcast to figure this out and also made TV and phone basically unusable).

I have a very beefy Asus gaming notebook. I take it to class if I need the performance for coding and such. Well I was sitting in my second class of the day with my laptop in my backpack on the floor by my leg. My leg brushed up ageist my bag and i got burned threw my paints by the bag. I quickly opened the bag and tryed to pull out my laptop,I say tried because I burned myself and could only get it out after putting on the gloves I have in my jacket pocket. When I got it out I discover it had been on for the past  hour and a half running a program I had written the was not only optimized but I had just tweaked that day to make it run-able albeit maxing out both CPU and GPU. I checked my thermals to find them at 103 C. I quickly turned it off and let it cool down on the desk for the remainder of the class. Lucky for me noting was broken however I have a feeling that the longevity of the computer has been somewhat compromised.

Was working on an HP laptop and when I finished, it had some pretty weird issues. I did a lot of diagnosis after this, including trying to get a Windows repair disc and fix the OS, try to get into the BIOS setup, use the hard disk with another computer, use a different hard disk with that computer, all of them failed. A few months later, I bought a 2.5" external hard disk enclosure and tried the faulty laptop's hard disk, just for fun. My god... It worked. I immediately grabbed my Windows repair disc and fixed the OS completely to the point that I could log in. About a week later, I grabbed a spare RAM module from another laptop. My god... It worked! It would fire up the Windows 7 Boot Manager, it would say "Starting Windows", but I didn't see Windows logo come up. I tried Startup Repair. Loading freezes, again. Try to enter the BIOS setup. It works. Press F9 to load default settings; menu locks up. Holds down Power button for 5 seconds. Start up again... Caps Lock LED blinks twice, pauses, then repeats. Well, the BIOS is f***ed. Grab a USB stick, download UEFI Support Environment, copy onto USB drive, press Win + B in an attempt to enter BIOS recovery. Nothing, because the computer doesn't have UEFI (facepalm again). This thing is f***ked.

I had made a PC for my mom, I had used the intel stock cooler on the CPU because she does not need anything more.

I had tested it out and made sure it worked, and right before I did the CPU test I just happened to open the side panel to realize that the CPU cooler had fallen off because the pins were not in the "Lock" position. (I was stupid back then!)

I almost died, because I was about to take it to 100% without any cooler.

It was 12.00am at night and I decided to put my computer to sleep and go to bed. Then at 2.59am my PC radomly turned on. It's been happening for weeks now and at the same time!

Probably gonna get my room  sprinkled with Holy Water or something.

Back when I knew nothing about computers I read up that cleaning parts with water was okay. I stupidly took out my GPU and used a gently wet cloth to wipe dust away. Let's just say that when I turned it back on my card was for sure dead.

Nothing beyond that. I thankfully learned my lesson then and there.
