HTC Volantis tablet rumored to get obscene amount of RAM?

Once again, @evleaks has leaked infos about some upcoming phones/ tablets. This time he leaked the possible spec info of the "upcoming" Nexus 9, HTC Volantis, and what surprise people is he stated that the tablet could get as much as 5GB of ram!? Of course he quickly stated then, that the spec is not yet finalized. But 5GB of ram??

According to @evleaks, the 8.9-inch Volantis is under testing with a 1680 x 1050 display, but would ship with a 2560 x 1600 panel just like in recent Samsung tablets – and all of these are 16:10 widescreen layouts, not 4:3. The idea of a 64-bit NVIDIA Tegra K1 is repeated (though it’s being tested with a Snapdragon 810), but instead of the 2GB of RAM mentioned before, @evleaks indicates that Volantis could get a whopping 5GB. He’s quick to clarify that the figure isn’t necessarily final, but HTC even evaluating a tablet with that much RAM is pretty interesting.

Other uncertainty lies with whether the tablet would get a 5MP or 8MP main camera, but the presence of 64GB flash storage sounds more certain.

The original leak from evleaks

HTC Volantis macro shot: silver aluminum unibody (earlier renders/concepts were “fake”), 64-bit Tegra K1 (testing w SD810), 5GB DDR3 (non-final), 8.9″ 1680×1050 (should ship with 2560×1600), 64GB, 5MP/1080p (8MP at retail?), Boomsound

Is anyone really excited for this..? There will be extremely slow performance and reaction time -- most likely.

That might be a lot for a tablet or phone, but I'd hardly call that obscene.

I can be a cynical a**hole at times. I apologize if I cause any offence at those time. I also occasionally have issues communicating my point. Extreme introversion + Photographic memory + Some other things.

What is the point? Who is going to need that much on a phone/tablet? My nexus 4 has 2GB, I've never used it all and i certainly can't see even the most hardcore users using 3GB. Surely the phone/tablet will slow to a crawl if you fill up 5GB.

More RAM dedicated to the GPU (we already see a performance benefit on 1080p going from 2GB to 3GB for this). You can keep more things in the cache which will speed up pretty much everything (less need to access the slow eMMC flash).

My 2GB Nexus 10 constantly runs out of RAM and has to expunge tabs I got in the background. As soon as I have a few tabs with galleries open it starts deleting the tabs in the background to keep the RAM from being completely full. So I have to constantly reload the pages because it deletes stuff it has already processed. It's a waste of time and battery (and if I am on cellular data, it wastes from my data cap as well).

We could definitely benefit from 4GB of RAM on a 2560x1600 tablet. 5GB seems a bit odd but whatever.

You can never have enough ram. NEVER.

Well I guess they could ship it with 2GB and then just download some more.
