I'm building a ~$1800 gaming pc in Finland, and i was thinking should i get windows 7 or 8? I prefer windows 7, but i'm afraid that games, keyboards, mice and so on will stop supporting Win7, so would windows 8,1 be a better choice?

Windows 7 support will not stop for years and years, its still the most common OS

That said I prefer windows 8 as it runs faster and has more features, You can use start8/startisback..(etc) to make it look and work like windows 7 while losing nothing from windows 8

Windows 7 support will be around for a long time.

I'm personally a fan of W7, but I've heard that 8.1 can be made to work like 7 while keeping the benefits from 8.1. Windows 9 shouldn't be too long off anyway, so you may be upgrading soon-ish.

That's if it's improved over Windows 8, of course.

What I've seen so far looks good. Could all just be made up though. But it looks like they might integrate some Metro stuff into a Windows 7 sort of layout, which actually looks good.

As long as I'm in control of how much Metro there is, I'm pretty much happy.

Without Metro, Windows 8 is pretty much Windows 7. What else can Microsoft add for Windows 9? Windows 7 is perfect as it is.

If you already have a legit copy of 7 then just use it,  whack a linux OS on the old pc and only buy a new OS if you need to.

I would say that if you already have Windows 7 on the PC, it wouldn't be worth the effort to upgrade just yet. Like everyone else said, Windows 7 will have support for a long time yet.

I've been lucky in that I've been buying every other OS and have dodged the really crappy ones.  I went from Win3.1 to Win98, skipped 2k/ME, had XP, skipped Vista, now I'm on Win7, I'll be holding out for Win9 hoping they learned from Win8 to just come out with 2 OS's 1 optimized for touchscreen/app type users and 1 optimized for business or for those who prefer the older Start button format, etc.  Time will tell.

Get either Windows 8 or 8.1. You can use the Windows Marketplace to upgrade to Windows 8.1 free regardless. To go with the cheapest version of base 8.

For gaming, definitely go with 8.1. If you're not gaming at all, then go with 7 if you prefer it.

Windows 8.1 Pro. Go to the forum Hot deals section. Well under $30.

It really depends but my preference right now would be 8.1 because if you follow the way there os work is that they alternate from a good to a bad os to a good os every release so based on that windows 9 will be good and I don't know if Microsoft will support upgrading from windows 7 to 9 but they will most differently support 8 to 9

Why the comic sans and huge font :L

That said, I switched to win 8 when I build my pc a year ago, and do not regret it. It's pretty much the same as 7 if you ignore the new start screen and install startisback, but little improvements here and there (e.g improved task manager, file copy screen and faster boot time) and it is slightly faster overall.

And as other said, you can get it really cheap here (22€ atm)

I would definitly use 8.1.

You might read alot how much windows 8+ sucks but it's really not true. Most people just don't wanna learn when something is changed. It's cleaner, faster and most of the anoying stuff that windows 8 had(such as fullscreen-metro-apps without a close button) have been fixed/changed with updates.
