Would you buy a phone with a fan?

StingBull

Hypothetical question. Let's say smartphone CPU's get so high powered that they need a fan to cool them. In fact we are getting there. Phones like LG G3 and Galaxy Note 3 throttle the CPU and dim the screen if the phone gets too hot.

Would you buy a phone with a fan for cooling?

Before any one asks it'll stay quiet during phone calls.

Having a fan means it's going to be thick and it's going to get dusty (you would have to clean it). Also it's another failing point.

The point of low power tech, is to keep wattage down, and as a consequence of it, it runs cooler (it's more efficient). So we will not need to cool our phones actively.

When this phone hits 88 miles per hour, you are gonna see some serious shit.

AAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!

When you need a phone with a built in fan, you no longer have a phone. It's become and undersized, overpriced, mini computer with advanced skype.

Having a fan would mean:

- Noise and vibration

- A thicker profile, which almost means a heavier phone.

- Greater power draw, which either means less battery life, or a bigger batter which directly means a heavier phone.

I can only think of one advantage, and that's having a cooler phone. But the drawbacks are just too great for me. I wouldn't buy one.

If a phone have a fan it means also have a heatsink

A slim heatsink like the notebook's is still thicker than the biggest phones out there

Add the fan, damn that would be bulky

Just imagine putting the thing with the fan on in your pocket, choking n shit

Nah

It would have to be a really, really slim fan... I don't think it would fly for most people, it most certainly wouldn't for me.

Nah I wouldn't.

Even the Snapdragon 800 series of processors are power sippers, except maybe the LG G3 which reviewers have been saying that it gets warm and wouldn't let you turn the brightness higher sometimes due to heat and power.

Also moving parts, more prone to failures, probably one of the reasons we've moved away from flip-phones.

No. Moving parts in a portable device have never been a good idea.

Also, I don't think that we need more powerfull CPUs anytime soon. The 805 already is quite a beast and I would like manufacturers to focus more on efficiency and new battery tech for now.

I don't really play many games for gameplay anymore honestly. I play most games just for the graphics.

Nope, not a chance, for much the reasons other posters had. I mean, I guess it could also cool your hand...but...just no.

It's not the newer processors that only have that problem. It's also the older ones. My Optimus G would also limit screen brightness if I played a game for too long.

It's because of the thin form factor of newer phones that you see the problem more often.

Nah

I don't quite agree on the heatsink part. There are some very, very slim ultrabooks out there.

You also don't *have* to have a heatsink. You're simply removing the hot air. Look at the Surface.

The newer processors are also all more efficient, it's not just speed. If you can provide both, why not?

There are many advances both in screen tech and CPUS (64bit) that will provide better battery life.

I honestly don't think that we need both. At least not at the moment. Optimized games already do look really good, while we still don't get a week of light to medium usuage out of a single charge.

I don't think we'll see battery life like that for a very, very long time.

There's a simple replacement tech for screens that removes a layer and replaces it with something else. It lets more light through, and is said to increase battery life up to 50%.

It's things like that, that are much more likely to appear in devices before an awesome new battery tech.

I don't think so either. It's just something that still is really important to me. Especially when I'm in the northern part of Germany where reception is pretty bad. That always drains the battery in no time.
