The galaxy note 4 could be the first 64bit Android smartphone.

geforceftw

http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2014/06/21/the-samsung-galaxy-note-4-could-be-the-first-64-bi.aspx

The note 4 may ship with the snapdragon 805 but this is still all rumors and speculation. Other than that it's similar to the s5 spec wise.

Are 64 bit phones necessary right now?

Here's the leaked specs from antutu

Didn't Samsung already released a low end Android phone with a 64-bit processor?

Goddamn bit wars... It's like it's the 90s all over again. I half expect someone to announce Blast Processing™ next.

Yes I am aware of that, but the A7 that is within the 5s is 64 bit.

Great! There's just so many mobile applications that were limited by the 4gb ram limitation of 32 bit along with slower overall performance like -blank-*

Actually, yes.

"Even existing 32-bit code will run more efficiently on [ARM's 64-bit] v8-A architecture than on native 32-bit ARM architecture" he said, referring to the company's newest processors like the Cortex-A53 chip.

"The architecture itself allows for more efficiency in the code. So, that means better battery life, quicker responsiveness, better features," he added.

Maybe not the OS, but in combination with the chipset.

Thats not because its 64 bit. That's just because the 64 bit chip will be more powerful than the 32 bit. It doesn't magically just give it better performance. You do know what 64 bit is, right? Its not just a magical word that makes everything faster. Its just a bigger bus that allows for more ram to be used.

Well something had to make the jump first and I think. It's better that hardware does it than. Software

Desktop -  i5 4670k, GTX 770, Maximums VI Hero, 2X Kingston Hyper X 3k in raid zero.

Laptop - Lenovo X230 Intel 535 480GB, 16GB Gskill memory, Classic Keyboard Mod, Triple USB 3.0 Express Card.

I think as well a 64 bit architecture allows for longer instruction codes, but still, I'm so sick of people swooning over the 64b processors like they're these amazing things that double performance.

That's just not the way it works. Samsung wants you to buy that but it's bs. The instruction set just makes the cpu more efficient in tasks that support 64-bit, it doesn't improve power consumption. It will speed up the os (slightly) provided that they rewrite android to support 64-bit fully, and anyway it's not like it's èarticularly slow right now...

Sticking with my nokia 5800.

Thanks haha.

Too many people find a correlation and then think there is a causal link to be found. Yes, battery life increased, but that wasn't because of the transition to 64 bit.

Tea, Metal, and poorly written code.

I buy a phone on a 2 year contract and pass it down my family a year later, have to pay for the new one full price though, so it ends up being around $900 every two years.

Yawn. We're fine with 3GB of RAM for now. Nobody needs to have a 64bit phone. It's too soon. Like consumer-level 64bit Windows XP back in the day.
