How often do you change to a new graphics card? another question i have is when you do , do you buy it along the same tier as the previous one on it's time line.(ie: still mid range) or do you buy something higher end?

Details separate people.

I seem to replace them every year or two. The reason I do this is just for the latest DX versions (but I can now see that the DX12 update will come to all GCN/ High end Nvidia cards so I wont need to). I always get the highest Tier there is. (290x/780ti)

Every 2 years +-1 year

Also depends how my money I have. I only bother upgrading when I can make a step up (such as from a 770 to a 880) and I sell my old GPU.

How I'm going to go about system upgrades is this

CPU/platform upgrade every 5-6 releases

GPU upgrade every 3 releases so say I bought a 570/580 upgrade to an 870/880

seems to be the most cost effective way to go about things and maintain high performance

Every two years, however i had 3 Different GPUs in the last 10 Months, due to the Mining craze. I generally try to get the high end stuff but money doesn't allways allow that. :D

Currently i am running a GTX 580, which i got for 120€ 3 months ago, just to keep myself above the surface until 20 nm releases.

who cares...

The last time I upgraded was when I switched from an 1024x768 CRT to an 1920x1080 TFT and my 5770 was a bit to slow for that resolution. So now I have a 7870.

My base rule is that something new like a GPU or CPU must be at last double the speed. Also there should be at last some actual need for it. I don't need to go from 200fps to 400fps... if you know what I mean.

I think the oculus could be a reason to get a faster GPU, but that is in the future. I'm very happy with what I have right now.

Also I don't buy "high end" but try to hit the sweet spot of performance/price/power consumption. The last one more because of noise then E-Bills.

If I include my laptops, 5 years. This is my first pc with a dedicated GPU. Its hard to say but if there is an affordable 4k thats 120 Hz or I come across a butt load of money i'll probably buy the gpu for that and use my 780 for dedicated physx or i'll just get a 2nd 780 for sli.

I upgrade every 2-3 years.  Seems to be the general time that it takes before I need beefier hardware to run a game. Right now I'm running an AMD Radeon HD 7770 Ghz Edition OC, but I plan to put 2 R9 280X's in my upcoming build (my current rig is 5 years old).
