1078p Youtube?

First of all: I have no idea where to put this so, although I don't like just dumping things here, I will just put it in the General Discussion thread. Flame me for it if you want ;)

Anyway: I was just watching a video on Youtube and out of pure curiousity I went and checked the "Stats for nerds" stats. And apparently this was the result...

http://puu.sh/9tMyx/2566f23aea.jpg - Screenshot

Why the unicorn is the video being displayed at 1920*1078? All the other times I have looked at this it has said that it's running at 1920*1080 which it should since I have a monitor with that resolution...

So yeah, just wondering if this is just something Youtube does or if my monitor have for some reason lost 2 pixels vertically...

EDIT: If anyone is wondering the video is about a game called Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance ;)

Sounds like a very awkward resolution. Maybe the way it's being displayed on your screen? Have you tested it on another computer?

That's an odd, odd, odd, down deep resolution. Odd, but kinda interesting. Probably not much more of a difference. Just short 3840 pixels of a full 1080P display.

I have literally no clue why, but it kinda bugs me so I am going to test it on my old computer later. Only started happening today though so kinda weird...

Yeah, maybe it's just a result of placebo effect, but I think I can actually notice the difference :( Just seems kinda like if I where to display a 1680*1050 on a 1080p display...

Again though: Probably just me.

Its just a number, like 729p

If you are refering to Watch Dogs it's 792p, but yeah... Just a very annoying number though :P

I have no problem on my side.

-> Try a different web browser

-> Don't use HTML5 video player of YouTube, but rather Flash.

You should find the culprit (web browser or HTML5 video player) that way.

I think it more so had to do with youtube's compression techniques.

Looks like they're following the trend of the Xbox One.

Plot twist: Microsoft have bought Youtube and will now make it so that only the Xbox One can view videos at 1080p.

Res is just a # in the eyes of YouTube lol.

#BecauseWhyTheHellWouldWeDisplayThingsProperly

Is your monitor having two rows of dead pixels...?

Nope, everything else is running as it should so yeah... Btw: When I have the video displayed like it is when you first press it it says that the resolution is 640*359 :|

I think it more so had to do with youtube's compression techniques.

Youtubes compression is kinda shitty so I guess...

I'll try that out :) Would just anticipate that if Youtube would work properly in a browser it would be Google Chrome since it they are both a product of Google...

Resolution is just a number.

Could you link to the video? But I imagine that the video was recorded/rendered with a 1920/1078p resolution. Does it have a black line along the top/&/bottom? It does imply that the original video is also that resolution.

I think it is just the compression algorithm YouTube uses. Take this video for example:

It's 1920*816 (which not the standard cinema res anyway. standard should be 1920*800) instead of 1080p. IMO they just cropped the video if it have stationary black bars to save disk space.

Either that or the original video was uploaded in the odd resolution. We'll never know for sure unless someone is willing to test them out  :P

Here's another example of a non standard horizontal pixels video resolution (1136*720)

Why the unicorn

I laughed my ass of xD

Probably it's the 2 vertical pixels used by the time bar though.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

It might not be youtube. Alot of video compression technology creates 2-4 rows of pixels of noise at the top and bottom of the image.  Cutting that in the editing can remove a significant distraction to some people.
