How to ground yourself and to what?

JackBlack

The title pretty much says it all.

How do you ground yourself with an antistatic wrist strap? Can you put the alligator clip on the metal part inside your PC Case?

When handling what parts should you be using it?

It's a stupid question but I want to make sure.

My room doesnt have a carpet floor and I tend not to wear shoes with rubber, so when I'm working with hardware, I mostly just touch a plugged in psu or the protection ground phase of a wall outlet

Well, there's carpet all over the place here...

It's also just a really cautious thing that I wanna use an antistatic wrist strap... Where do you normally want to put the alligator clip on? a metal part inside your case or where?

you want to attach it to a grounded metal part. so for example your pc case IF you have a psu installed and plugged into the wall outlet, any electronic device with a metal housing and ground phase connector will work though

When I worked at "Siemens" here in Germany, we put our bands on the pc case or the ground phase of the wall outlet, both are perfectly okay and save to work with.

easy way, wrist to the case. Done.

Or if you dont have a strap (like me, never used one) ground out on the case before touching any component.

I tied a copper wire from my toe and tied the other end to the inside of my old PC. (the inside, unpainted) Nothing to worry about. I've put my components on top of the anti static bag by accidents many times before and nothing ever happened.

But then again, I was on a hardwood floor, barefooted.

Basically...

Wrist strap on your wrist then attached to your PC Case metal part with a plugged in PSU both in the PSU and the wall outlet?

I was being sarcastic, hahah.

Isn't it risky at some point, though? Sometimes there's still electrical current going through even if the switch is off

Hopefully everything goes well otherwise I might end up flipping out if I kill a component.

Absalutly you can ground your self to the case, what I like to do is just touch a plugged in PSU from time to time to discharge ant static, Im not to fund of the wrist straps.

Where do you touch the PSU? Anywhere? Even if it's one of the fancy painted ones? I ask you because you practically live in the same humid tropical weather as I do, I live in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico.

Your PSU is a grounded source when its plugged into a powersource ( the wall), you can have it plugged into a wall without it being turned on and it will discharge static elictrcity. If that makes since

i lick the 24 pin when the psu is plugged in and on. that tends to give me a bit of charge.

You can have it in or out of your case,it does not make a deffrance, and you do have to have power runing the the PSU ( fliping the switch on, but you do not have to have your PSU hooked up to your sysem or even runing at all. Just every once in a while touch the PSU to discharge your self from any static elictricity building up on you.
