Is the HD 6000 series still relevant?

So I've been offered some good deals on some HD 6000 series cards by some friends, and I was curious what you guys thought. How do these cards stack up against newer cards in some current games like Watch Dogs, Battlefield 4, and Planetside 2 at 1080p.

HD 6990 - $250

Crossfire 6870s - $140

HD 6970 - $85

Soooo... Thoughts? Should I take any of these?

(My current card is a GTX 550ti, So anything is really an upgrade.)

The 6970 looks worth it.

The top tier or 2nd to top tier single GPUs of that generation are a good option to hold yourself above the surface, especially if you can find a good deal on one. I have a GTX 580, it is about equivalent to as GTX 660 Ti give or take.

The AMD side has generally more VRAM, which is good for modern games. So if you can find a good deal on a card that still works fine, get it.

Edit: i might add that such a card is probably just for temporary use, like i am waiting for 20 nm releases with my GTX 580.

who cares...

Personally I would try and get something newer, maybe save up a little while

None of those are particularly great cards

I would say the 6970, if anything. But you could probably get a 280/280x for around the same price as the 6990. Just guessing.

The 6970 seems like a good deal. I still have a 5870 in my spare rig and it plays games just fine (the 6970 wasn't that much faster). For $85 it say go with it, its defo a lot better than you current gpu.

You can always sell it on in the future if you want something better :P

Looks like that's the popular opinion here, I think I'm gonna grab it tomorrow, and maybe post some benchmarks on here.

Personally I would never buy a older generation of any hardware but if the performance is still good and the price is good then why not.

You wont be disappointed.

Make sure your psu is compatible before you buy though.

Tbh price has never really been an issue for me, I just keep waiting for new cards to come out, just to see that none of them are really that appealing so I wait for the next generation.

That is understandable though doesnt make sense to wait for new things then buy cards 2 generations old

Just buy the latest card you can afford/happy to spend money on and stick with it until its performance is no longer enough. I think buying an old card is just shooting yourself in the foot needlessly

Well I'm not sure if there are any current level $85 GPUs comparable to the 6970. I'm hoping to upgrade to Maxwell when the new flagship is released (880 or whatever it is).

There may not be, but I personally wouldn't want an $85 GPU when I could quite easily afford more

but that is completely up to you

Nothing wrong with getting a used GPU....or CPU, or mobo, or RAM, and so forth. Recently got an AMD Phenom II X6 1100T, Asus Crosshair IV Formula and a Palit GTX580 3GB. Built an improved 3rd rig (previous 3rd rig was the X9650) used the HD7970 for the 'new' 3rd rig and the GTX580 went into the 4th rig. The GTX580 3GB performed admirably with the games I've tried with it like Wolfenstein TNO and Watch Dogs....heck, will be getting a 1 year old Enermax Maxrevo 1500W PSU for about 150USD in a few hours' time.

The HD6970 is still a useful card, and at 85USD, it seems like a good deal.........

I used my H6970 until last spring. It's still a decent card. I used to play most of the new games at Mid to High presets 1080p, AA on with around 50-60FPS. That card is a bargain!

BTW my math teacher is still rocking a 6850 and he says games run fairly well. Best of luck!
